TikTok is where dreams of internet fame come true, one viral video at a time. It’s the software that gave us viral dances, brilliant sketches, and strangely pleasant cleaning hacks (why is that so addictive?). While TikTok can feel like a frenzy of spontaneity, going viral isn’t entirely up to luck.

TikTok is about to undergo a number of changes that will fundamentally alter the way you consume and create video. Okay, I’m going to get a cup of coffee because we have a lot to discuss.

Update #1: The Edit Post Button

The first and most fascinating TikTok feature is the Edit post button. And it is precisely what it sounds like.

You can finally fix those irritating typos, which I appreciate as a social media manager who will gaze at my own mistakes until I have to delete and repost. However, it appears like there will be certain constraints, such as having only seven days to amend after posting.

Update #2: The Refresh Button

Next, click the Refresh button. This function allows you to essentially reset your feed.

And those of us who spend a little too much time on TikTok know that it can get uncomfortable when you go too far down a certain rabbit hole and start getting a lot of one type of video and you’re like, “Side eye, side eye”. Now you can just hit the Reset button to refresh the feed.

Update #3: Auto-Scroll Mode

The next two functions are connected to scrolling and watching videos. First, enable auto-scroll mode. (Say it ten times fast. I literally cannot. That’s difficult to say). However, it now allows users to navigate TikTok without using their hands.

Simply hold down on a video on your For You Page and select the Auto-Scroll option to enable the feature.

Update #4: Change the Playback Speed on Videos Over 30 Seconds

The other recent upgrade is for videos that last 30 seconds or longer. Okay, did you know that you can now vary the playback speed of the videos you watch?

Simply hold down on the video – which must be longer than 30 seconds – and you’ll see an option to adjust the speed at which you watch it. So, clearly, this will be really beneficial to all of our shrinking attention spans.

Update #5: Save Videos Without the TikTok Watermark

Next up is my particular favorite feature, which I can’t wait to have. And, if you already have it, don’t tell anyone, because TikTok will soon allow you to save films without a watermark.

Update #6: More Categories at the Top of the Screen

This next one is getting mixed reactions, so please share your ideas in the comments.

TikTok has quietly begun to add more categories to the top of the app in place of the regular FYP and Following categories. It truly seems similar to YouTube, where there are several categories at the top, such as Fashion, Food, Gaming, and so on.

This undoubtedly provides people a greater sense of control and organization over the type of content they like to consume. On the other side, there has been a lot of feedback that it looks cluttered, and I personally believe it takes away some of the unpredictable magic that makes TikTok unique.

This final one isn’t a feature update, but I had to include it. Mercedes-Benz just revealed that TikTok will be integrated into their latest E-class models’ operating systems. So, when your automobile comes to a stop, a full screen will appear for you to watch TikToks.

That’s extremely distracting, but if that’s not evidence that TikTok is taking over, I don’t know what is. However, you might see it as a hint to put more effort into keeping up with the platform this year.
