The Pros And Cons of Selling on Etsy

But as popular as Etsy has become, is it the right site for your burgeoning online business? It’s one thing if you make antiques as a hobby and need an effective platform to sell them on; but what if you have higher ambitions?

There are pros and cons to using Etsy, and they’re worth considering before you make a decision on which platform to use — particularly if you’re thinking of quitting your day job and becoming a full-time online retailer.

1. Setting Up Shop

It’s not complicated to open an Etsy shop. No need for your friendly neighborhood techie to walk you through it.

It only take a few minutes to set up, and it’s free. Etsy also has a step-by-step guide that’s easy to follow.

2. The Web Traffic is Already There

Etsy has a built-in audience. The website’s fans are highly engaged.

Millions of them come to the site every month, looking for specific items, and they generally are people eager to buy.

What more could you ask for?

And then there are the Etsy sellers as well. Etsy encourages its online retailers to become a collaborative community, where sellers share tips with one another on how to be successful, and are ready to mentor each other.

Etsy is also great for mobile apps, which is where so many consumers do their shopping today, and you can set up new listings through the app as well.

3. Free To Be You

While consumers love mass-produced items like smartphones, specialized items are all the rage, too.

A lot of the items on Etsy are handmade, and last year, the total value of handmade goods, crafts and vintage items sold on this platform rose by 20% to $902 million. Not too shabby.

Active buyers went up 17%, to about 36 million. The value of goods bought on Etsy rose by an annual total of $3.3 billion — which is up from $1 million in the host site’s first year.

Let’s face it, not everyone wants items that are mass-produced. To some, those kinds of goods means ordinary, and sameness.

They’re looking for something far more unique that helps sets them apart.

That gives the Etsy sellers an opportunity to showcase what they can make that truly is unique and different.

And the built-in customer base Etsy has is a great platform to start with.

“Marketing trends change over time, and are different, depending on the market segment you are trying to attract. When it comes to fulfilling a very specific need for a demographic, specialty products could be the solution to drive more sales in the door. Specialty products have unique features and characteristics, as they are designed as a unique solution for a designated market group.” – Kimberlee Leonard, SmallBusiness.Chron

4. It’s Ideal for SEO

Etsy provides its sellers with great analytics, so you can take time to review your numbers and use them to figure out how to tweak your search engine optimization efforts.

You can check keywords that people are searching for when they find your shop, another great tool for doing online advertising. It’s also easy to download your sales and financial statistics for review.

But there are challenges as well. Here are a few.

1. Pricing competition

Because Etsy is so popular and attracts so many sellers, you’ll find yourself going up against a lot of competitors listing the same type of products. Some sellers feel like the site has become over-saturated.

That’s particularly true considering that Etsy’s platform has been opened to mass producers as well as the small craft shops and individual sellers.

That has an impact on prices. If your competitors are cutting their prices to gain an edge, you could be forced to do the same. That cuts into your ability to make a profit.

And if you’re lowering your prices, how many items would you need to sell to make a solid profits? Thousands?

That’s a tough haul.

There’s always the likelihood of someone else is ready to take an even lower profit margin than you would. And that’s not even counting the new sellers who keep flooding Etsy with listings.

cutting prices
2. Should You Limit Yourself to Etsy Fans?

Yes, a lot of buyers go on Etsy because the items are unique and hard to find elsewhere. But that’s part of the challenge as well.

Customers who are not looking for specialized items may bypass Etsy and hit Amazon or eBay instead.

Think of it this way: Imagine you decide to buy a new coat. If you’re not looking for a handmade one or a specially designed look, chances are the listings that show up on Google will be for sites other than Etsy.

That also makes it harder for your items to rank higher on Google for the same reason.

3. Etsy Shares Your Profits

Once you’ve made some sales, keep in mind that Etsy takes 3.5 percent of it for the privilege of renting space to you on their site. There’s a listing fee of $0.20 for every item you put up, and then you pay 3.5 percent on top of that.

So every dollar in profits isn’t yours to keep.

In addition, there are fees for accepting credit card payments or PayPal.

Etsy views these fees as the price you pay for taking advantage of their strong customer base.

But still, you’re sharing your profits with them. When you set your prices, you need to factor in what you’re required to pay to stay on there.

4. You’re Always a Renter

You’re essentially renting space from Etsy. The host site fully dictates the terms of what you do, what your website looks like, and how it functions.

In order to gain their online foot traffic, you have to concede a lot of control to them and live by their terms.

As a result, you have limited branding opportunities. Etsy will allow your store to have a banner and the images for your listings, but that’s about it. Everything else is standardized by the platform.

Etsy has the final say, rather than you as the seller, over what happens at your shop and can shut you down immediately and without warning for any rule violations.

So it’s hard to turn your dreams of an online business into a reality, as opposed to just a side business, if you don’t have full control over it.

5. You Can’t Create an Email List

Another rule: Etsy won’t let you ask buyers if you can add them to your email list. You don’t have the ability to communicate with buyers that way.

As any marketing professional can tell you, there’s a lot of revenue and profit to be found on an email list. Etsy cuts out that possibility.

10 Quick Selling Items on Etsy in 2022

1. Handmade and personalized jewelry

Without a doubt, handmade jewelry is one of the most popular things to sell on Etsy.

And with good reason. In large numbers, people go to Etsy’s online marketplace looking for one-of-a-kind earrings, necklaces, bracelets, rings, and more.

Remember, a jewelry purchase is a distinctly personal decision; buyers want a unique piece for a unique person. Even in a market that may seem saturated, there is always room for new sellers that can create something unique and personal.

2. Jewelry and craft supplies

The first millionaire of the California Gold Rush was not someone panning for gold but rather the person selling the pans, picks, and shovels.

With so many people buying and selling handmade jewelry on Etsy, it might not be a surprise that the top-selling category on the platform is actually craft and jewelry supplies.

This means the beads, gems, and stones used in handmade jewelry and the fine-point tools to put things together. But it also means supplies for crafters like ribbons, yarn, miniatures, crochet, and knitting patterns. In fact, one of the most popular things to sell on Etsy in this category currently are DIY craft kits.

3. Printables

Printables are digital products customers purchase, then download, and print themselves from the comfort of their own home. This can include resume templates, chore charts, even photo albums or coloring books.

But the #1 hot seller in this category right now are planners.

This means everything from day and budget planners, to fitness goal trackers, to meal planners to stick on the fridge, even blog or social media content planners.

It’s simple: people want to pay for something that keeps them organized and saves them time.

The best part of selling printables on Etsy?

First, printables are an excellent source of passive income – create once, then sell forever!

Second, with printables, there is no shipping to worry about!

4. Digital artwork

Today, more artists than ever are going digital.

This means that artists on Etsy are selling printable wall art and small-scale prints, graphics, and labels for businesses, banners, and unique home décor, even funny or inspirational quotes.

Like with printables, selling digital art pieces means the seller does not have to worry about shipping, and the buyer gets in the instant gratification of getting their purchase in their hands immediately.

5. Stickers

If you are looking for creative things to sell in your Etsy store, stickers are one of the best choices.

For new sellers, stickers are inexpensive and easy to produce and ship – create the design once, then partner with a print-on-demand service that will print and ship your product for you.

And for buyers, well, from bumper stickers to wall stickers, to stickers you put on your phone case or water bottle, they are a quick and easy way to customize your life.

6. Notebooks and journals

Some say Etsy is the platform bringing “intimacy and individualism back to commerce.”

What could be more intimate than a journal?

From gorgeous diaries and funky travel journals to basic notebooks for scribbling, and everything in between, to provide people with a unique space for their innermost thoughts, or even for their schoolwork, is a booming business on Etsy.

7. Party decorations

Party decoration ideas from Etsy

It’s simple: people like to spend money on special events. More and more, these people are spending this money on Etsy.

There, party planners search for one-of-a-kind party décor, handmade items, accessories, party supplies, invitations, and party games. Yes, we’re talking about birthdays and baby showers, graduations and weddings, but the chances are, if you can think of a party idea, you can probably find it on Etsy.

8. Wedding products

Did you know that the wedding market is worth over $70 billion yearly in the US alone?

When talking about selling party décor, wedding products are at the top of the mountain and are, without a doubt, some of Etsy’s best selling items.

Why Etsy?

Because more so than maybe any other occasion, people don’t want something generic for their wedding. So they come to Etsy for handmade invitations, decorations, and jewelry, for one-of-a-kind bouquets and corsages, even for their wedding dresses!

9. Personalized cards

Personalized cards ideas

Handmade wedding invitations are best sellers on Etsy. But the thirst for personalized cards goes far beyond that.

Think about it; how many times have you stood in the corner store looking for the perfect card for a specific person, event, or occasion, only to eventually settle for something good but not great.

Etsy solves this problem with its treasure of unique options that allow adding a personal touch, which is why many Etsy sellers have had success with personalized holiday cards, announcement cards, even cards leveraging popular memes.

10. Personalized gifts

Good news, it has never been easier to print art or design on just about anything!

This means you can let people create their design and print it on coffee mugs and glasses, jewelry and keychains, t-shirts and socks, and pretty much anything else you can think of!

The best part is, like stickers, with print-on-demand services, you can partner with a business that will print and ship the orders for you.

How to Successfully Sell on Etsy in 2022

Becoming an Etsy seller in 2022 is easy. There are three straightforward steps you need to take to sell your products on Etsy.

1. Set up Your Etsy Store

The first step to becoming a seller on Etsy is to set up your Etsy store. You can do this by visiting the Etsy homepage, clicking Sell on Etsy and then clicking Open Your Etsy Shop. You’ll be guided through the process of creating your store’s settings, including setting your language, currency type and location.

You’ll be able to select a store name here as well. This is where you can become creative, either using your existing company brand name or coming up with a completely new, inspired brand name if it’s your first time selling anything. Whatever you end up choosing, the name of your Etsy store should be between four and 20 characters, without spaces or special characters.

2. Select your Payment Method

Once you’ve got your Etsy store all set up, you’ll need to decide which payment method you’d like to use and provide Etsy with your own billing information for identification and authorization purposes.

When it comes to payment solutions, you can offer your customers the ability to pay via PayPal or through Etsy Payments when they complete a sale with you. Etsy Payments is the most popular payment solution for those selling on Etsy, as it is easy to use and allows you to be paid in a number of different ways.

3. Set your Shipping Fees

When setting up as a seller on Etsy, it’s also important to set shipping fees appropriately. You may want to consider factors such as whether you’ll be shipping your products only within your country, or also internationally to buyers in other countries. If so, you’ll want to make sure that differing shipping fees are accounted for, including duty and shipping processing time.

Once you’ve done all that, you can begin listing your products.

4. Write Eye-Catching Listings

Your written words will help to sell your product, too. Start with a title that includes keywords a buyer might search for when looking for that type of item. It’s important to put your product’s key attributes at the beginning of your title, too.

“Your title should make it easy for shoppers to quickly see what you’re selling and what makes it unique,” according to the Etsy Sellers Handbook. “Shoppers only see the first few words of your title when they’re looking at search results, so make sure you’re using that space to describe what your item is. Although it’s important to be descriptive and use relevant words and phrases, your titles should be short and easy to read.”

The body of your description should describe your products accurately and include details such as size, what it’s made from and why it is unique to your shop. Also clearly communicate important variables such as shipping rates and options.

If you’re going to sell on Etsy, study other successful shops. Whether it’s a competitor or a store offering something entirely different from your product, there is a lot to learn from checking out what other sellers are doing to reach buyers.

5. Don’t Neglect Your Social Media

The power of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest shouldn’t be forgotten. Every friend or follower you have on social media is a potential buyer, and Etsy makes it easy to link your listings to your accounts.

In fact, through Etsy, you can create six types of posts to share on social media. Those are:

  • Your five-star reviews
  • Your most recent listings, up to 25
  • Upcoming coupon or sales events
  • Items you’ve favorited
  • Milestones you’ve reached, such as the anniversary of your shop
  • Updates about your shop

These can post to your social media just by clicking “Shop Manager” from your Etsy account, then clicking “Social Media.” Create your post, add images and your caption, and then choose the platforms where you want your posts to go.

To be successful, you should post regularly; set a schedule as a reminder. Vary the posts you share so that your followers aren’t inundated with just “buy, buy, buy” messages. Photos of works in progress or your creative process can be valuable. Be sure to respond to comments your followers make to keep the conversation running.

6. Provide Top-Notch Customer Service

Communicating with customers is key if you want your Etsy business to thrive. Given that Etsy items largely are handmade, a prospective buyer might want to customize an order and will contact you directly to inquire.

For example, you might have posted a listing for a throw pillow in red buffalo check and a customer really wants navy blue checks. Or, a customer might be more tempted to buy from you if you can ship it on the same day.

Responding right away, whether you can fulfill an order or not, will show customers you are a serious business person. Pleasing a buyer likely will result in a five-star rating, which is the aspiration of every seller and shows other customers you can deliver on your promises.

No matter what the circumstances, don’t forget to provide fast shipping options for your customers. Etsy shipping options might include standard shipping times, but shipping your items fast is a great way to impress and secure repeat customers.

7. Commit Time To Grow Your Etsy Business

Etsy sellers recommend doing something every day toward reaching your selling goals. That could be making items one day, taking the photos the next and adding the listing on the third day. Etsy is as big of a time commitment as you make it.

Like any business, however, the more time you’re willing to commit to making smart decisions, increasing production output, promoting items on social media and planning for the future, the more successful you’re likely to be.

Do I Need a Business License For Etsy?

Etsy doesn’t require sellers to have a business license to sell products via its platform. However, the state, county, and local municipality where you’ve formed your business may require you to hold licenses and permits to operate your company legally.

Depending on where the customers ordering your products live, you might also have to apply for a sales tax permit in those states or local jurisdictions.

In states with Marketplace Facilitator laws in place, Etsy calculates, collects, and remits sales tax on orders shipped to those states. You can find a current list of the states for which Etsy does sales tax collection and remittance on the Etsy website.

So, what about sales tax for orders shipped to states that don’t have Marketplace Facilitator legislation?

In those states, the Etsy seller may be responsible for registering with the state or local tax bureau—and for calculating, collecting, and remitting sales tax. Generally, sales tax registration is required when a seller has either economic nexus or a physical presence in the state.

Who Pays For Shipping on Etsy?

Sellers are responsible for shipping their sold items to buyers. If you’re using a shipping or fulfillment service, please keep in mind that you are ultimately responsible for making sure that your buyers receive their orders.

By selling on Etsy, you agree to:

A. Provide an accurate “ships from” address.
B. Specify your shipping costs and processing times in your listings.
C. Ship items promptly after they are sold. Prompt shipping means that you ship each item within 30 days of purchase, unless you specify otherwise in your processing time or agree to a different shipping period with the buyer through Messages. Before you update your processing time for a specific order, you must first obtain your buyer’s consent.
D. Comply with all local and international shipping and customs regulations. We know that shipping and customs regulations can be tough to read, so check out these Help articles on international shipping using United States Postal Service (USPS), Canada Post, Royal Mail, Australia Post, Global Postal Shipping, and Yakit Shipping Partners.
E. Ship to the address listed on the Etsy receipt.
F. Mark the order as shipped when you ship it, or use a shipping label purchased on Etsy, which automatically marks your order as shipped. Remember that you may only mark an order as shipped after you actually have shipped it. When you mark an order as shipped, the buyer will receive a notification.
G. Charge an appropriate amount for shipping. US and Canadian sellers may be able to use calculated shipping to have shipping costs calculated automatically.

By entering tracking information or delivery confirmation on Etsy, you’re giving us permission to collect and share this data received from your chosen shipping carrier with the buyer.

In the unlikely event an order does not arrive, be prepared to provide valid proof of shipping. Valid proof of shipping must show that the item actually was shipped and that it was sent to the address provided on Etsy. If a buyer does not receive their order, they may file a case against your shop.

But don’t fret, Etsy offers protection to sellers who meet our Seller Protection Program requirements.

What is a Good Profit Margin For Etsy?

Margin is a percentage of the selling price. For example, your $140 item that cost you $100 has $40 added to it. The markup is 40 percent. Because you sold it for $140 and made $40 in profit, divide your profit, 40, by the selling price, 140.

You find in this case that you have a 28.5 percent profit margin, because 40 divided by 140 equals .285. Multiply by 100 to get the percentage, which is 28.5 percent. If all your products were priced in the same way, you could say your business operates on a 28.5 percent profit margin, meaning you make 28.5 percent on everything you sell.

As your business grows, start tracking expenses. Selling on Etsy costs money — you’re going to pay $0.20 for each item you list on Etsy, and it takes 3.5 percent of the sale. But there are other business expenses — transportation, shipping materials, website costs, office supplies and workspace rental, for example.

Build these expenses into your item price by dividing your monthly expenses by the number of items you sell each month and adding that number to your prices. For example, if your monthly expenses were $124 and you sell 31 items each month, divide 124 by 31 to get 4. So, add $4 to your price.

Do I Have to Report Etsy Income?

If you sell items on Etsy, you must pay income tax on your income—usually, the total amount you earned by selling your products, less your business expenses. Etsy reports your gross income to the IRS on Form 1099-K, but even if you don’t receive a 1099-K, you must report Etsy sales income on your tax return.

If your state has an income tax, you must pay state income taxes on the net income from your Etsy sales as well.

Do I Pay Taxes on Etsy Sales?

Some state and local governments charge sales taxes—usually a percentage of the value of each sale. In many cases, it’s the responsibility of the online seller to collect this tax from the buyer and send it on to the taxing authorities.

Sales tax laws are not the same in each jurisdiction, so make sure to research the rules in your area.

Don’t worry about knowing which tax forms to fill out when you are self-employed, TurboTax Self-Employed will ask you simple questions about you and your business and give you the business deductions you deserve based on your answers. TurboTax Self-Employed uncovers industry-specific deductions.

How Many Sales Does Etsy Get a Day?

With millions of products and millions of sellers, and with a mix of new makers and established retailers, Etsy is an e-commerce giant.

That’s why we’ve rounded up some essential Etsy facts that everyone working in e-commerce needs to know.

  • Last year, Etsy’s annual merchandise sales volume totaled $4.97 billion US dollars.
  • In the first six months of 2020, Etsy sales grew 71% YoY.
  • Etsy acquired Reverb, an online marketplace for musical instruments, for $275 million US dollars in 2019.
  • Experts predict that Etsy’s revenue will grow 22% between 2019 and 2021.
  • Etsy has three major revenue streams, including services like website hosting platform Pattern and promoted listings, but the marketplace consistently brings in the most.
  • Etsy generates over $330 million US dollars in revenue from marketplace fees, including listing and transaction fees.
  • Etsy became a publicly traded company in the US in 2015, about 10 years after it was founded.

This one’s simple: Etsy is growing. It’s also growing even faster than predicted. Online shopping has increased over the past six months with the coronavirus pandemic, and Etsy is seeing those results.

Most experts are predicting that the boost in online sales will stick around, too, which is promising for Etsy’s continued growth—and yours.

How Much Does Etsy Take Per Sale?

Joining and starting a shop on Etsy is free. There are three basic selling fees: a listing fee, a transaction fee, and a payment processing fee.

It costs USD 0.20 to publish a listing to the marketplace. A listing lasts for four months or until the item is sold. Once an item sells, there is a 5% transaction fee on the sale price (including the shipping price you set). If you accept payments with PayPal, there is also a payment processing fee based on their fee structure.

Listing fees are billed for $0.20 USD, so if your bank’s currency is not USD, the amount may differ based on changes in the exchange rate.

You pay an advertising fee on any sales you make from Offsite Ads. When you open your Etsy shop, you can decide if you want to participate in Etsy’s advertising services.

How Long Does it Take to Make Money on Etsy?

Waiting for your first sale on Etsy can be a long and anxious process.

There’s no guarantee that your shop will begin to sell within the first week or even a month of launching on Etsy. There are shops that sell right away, but more likely, your shop will have to take a little time before it begins to sell. When Should You Expect Your First Sale on Etsy?

New Etsy shops can take from one week to over a month to get that first sale. There are outliers that receive their first sale within three to six months, and there are shops that get sales immediately.

It isn’t an exact science, but you can average about one to three weeks for your first sale, depending on view count. For those shops that get immediate sales, you can probably bet they have a preexisting following of fans or followers on social media that want to invest in these products.

What is The Slowest Month on Etsy?

Slow sales do not mean zero sales. Learn what your customers want during the slow seasons and offer them exactly that. Run research and create collections of what most people buy in the month of January, February, and March.

For example, most people are hyper-alert about their health after holidays, so exercise equipment and healthy foods are on top of their lists. These also align with the trend of new year resolutions where people target losing weight.

If you plan to run some kind of sales, target Toys, Gift Wraps, and gifting materials, holiday decorations, and winter/ holiday gear. People often stock on these items post-holidays in the hope of getting them at low cost.

Another popular sale during the month of January is the “White Sale” where linens such as sheets, towels, and other soft furnishings are sold.

Televisions are another popular commodity before the Super Bowl which is falling on February 7, 2021.

Martin Luther King Jr.’s day falls on January 18. Which is a date to remember as the most popular stores run sales during this week. Hence, people expect to get products at low prices and great discounts.

Products for Renovations such as Carpeting and Flooring are popular with the onset of the new year.

Professional apparel and accessories such as Suits and Office Bags are also popular. This is because mostly, people love to begin the new year with a fashion statement.

Another one of the Slowest eCommerce sale months on Google Shopping is February. Clearance sales on Furniture from last season is a great idea in the month of February. Especially so, as all the new lines are launched as the Spring Collection by the month of March. This renders the old collections less preferable to shop once new models arrive.

Mattresses are one of the bestsellers during President Day sales. Additionally, Gifting items such as Jewelries, Chocolates, Perfumes, Candles, Gift Cards, Scarves, etc.; are popular during Valentine’s week. During this week, Cellphones and Tablets are also in high demand. People like to gift these to their loved ones nowadays.

Another one of the Slowest eCommerce sale months on google shopping is March. It also marks the onset of Spring. And this officially becomes the time for people to shop for Spring and Summer goods. All the famous Apparels and Furniture manufacturers launch the Spring Collection during this period. These are actually the most sort after products online during this time.

Luggage and Frozen Foods are absolute popular items.

Jewelry and Gift Cards are popular during Mother’s Day Week. Home Cleaning Supplies and Garden Tools are also in demand during Spring Season.

St. Patrick’s Day falls on March 17 is a great time to run sales, just make sure you sell something green.

Does Etsy Count Your Own Views?

Views are how many times your listings and shop have been seen while visits are the number of individual people who have visited your shop.

One of the reasons it is so hard to say that you should get a sale after 100 views or 1,000 or even 10,000 views, is because we are all selling different things!

This is what stats looked like within a month on two different stores…

Results from two different Etsy stores

If you are selling a hot property like gold necklaces, you might get a gagillion views, but have very low sales. Selling vintage cow doorstops? For real, there are months where my vintage store gets under a 1,000 views

How do You Become a Top Seller on Etsy?

Sellers are eligible for the ‘Super Seller’ badge if they:

  1. Have more than 25 sales.
  2. Ship on time for the majority of orders (including sellers who sell digital downloads)
  3. And have 5 or more reviews, with the majority of reviews being 5 stars.

How do I Get my Etsy Shop Noticed?

1. Put the Category in Your Title

As you know, it’s important to include the category in your title. These words are what shoppers are likely to type in when searching for a particular product.

For example, if you make pocket watches, you’d most likely list your product within the pocket watch subcategory. Make sure you include “pocket watch” in your product title since potential shoppers are most likely using those keywords when searching.

2. Use Longtail Keywords In Titles

The shorter a keyword is, the more traffic it will get. That’s a good thing, right? Not necessarily. Using a “longtail” keyword (a phrase with three or more words that is more specific) may likely bring in more sales.

Well, how does that make any sense?

People who use a shorter, more generic, keyword are often browsing and don’t know what they want. They’ll also be bombarded with a ton of products to sift through, which means more competition for you.

People searching with a more specific keyword are often more likely to make a purchase, and there’ll be less products to sift through, meaning less competition for you.

To continue with the earlier example, a generic keyword a person might use would be “watches” which would generate a ton of product listings to comb through. A person further down the sales funnel might use a longtail keyword such as “antique pocket watch” which would generate fewer results, but those results are exactly what they’re searching for, their specific e-commerce niche.

Using “antique pocket watch” in your product title will ensure your product listing is shown to these potential buyers.

3. Put Primary Keyword in Title First

The first 30 characters (approximately) are the most important for SEO. The first keyword in your title should be your money word. That means you shouldn’t put anything unnecessary in that prime spot such as size, color, or brand name.

4. Include Synonyms

Each person will use different words to search for the same product. While it’s important to put your primary keyword first in your product title, you should still consider other words the product may be known and searched by.

Capitalize on this and use synonyms after your keywords in a product title or include them in your product description and tags.

5. Vary Keywords for Similar Products

Etsy does what is called “declumping” which means Etsy won’t include more than one or two items for each seller in search results.

So, that means you shouldn’t use the same primary keyword for more than a couple of items. If you do, you’re essentially competing against yourself for a spot at the top of the search results.

Make sure more products show up in different search results by using different keyword variations for similar products.

6. Don’t Be Too Creative with Titles

As a seller on Etsy, you’re a creative and unique business owner. While it may be tempting to allow your creativity to extend product names, it’s better if you don’t. It makes for a very ineffective title, a common Etsy seller mistake.

People who are searching for products won’t use cutesy or overly creative terms. For example, if you sell original paintings, you don’t want to put the unique name of your painting in the title. Instead, use terms like “abstract painting, acrylic on canvas” in your title and save the painting’s title for the product description.

7. Use Keywords in Product Tags

Etsy allows up to 13 tags for your items, which is another great opportunity to add in relevant search terms. Each tag can be 20 characters long, so think of as many search terms as you can and add them to your tags. Here are a few types of keywords to use:

  • Synonyms such as “timepiece” and “wristwatch” for your watches
  • Descriptors “men’s watch” or “wooden watch” or “antique watch”
  • Long-tail keywords “antique men’s watch” or “1925 gold watch” or “engraved pocketwatch” or “anniversary watch”

Etsy states that you shouldn’t repeat any categories or attributes because those are already accounted for in the search results. Save the more specific keywords for the tags.

8. Earn Backlinks

Backlinks (also called inbound links) are links to your site from other websites. Earning backlinks is crucial to improving your Etsy SEO because they increase search engine confidence in your site. Here are three strategies to help you earn backlinks:

Better Blogging – Blogs not only grow your audience, but can also increase your SEO, establish your brand as an industry leader, and help you earn backlinks.

Socializing – When you’re sharing links to your blog and website on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and other social media channels, it increases your chances of reaching new customers who might backlink to your shop.

Reaching Out – Make a list of different mediums that may want to highlight your products or shop, including publications, blogs, and social media accounts. Then reach out to them. Consider incentivizing those who are interested by offering a sample or discount to sweeten the deal.

9. Renew Listings

Renewing your existing Etsy listings when they expire will give you a small boost in Etsy’s search rankings. While this isn’t going to be a long-term solution, it does help with the visibility of competitive keywords. This can be especially helpful during higher sales periods, like the holidays.

10. Create Great Customer Experiences

Etsy wants to make sure that sellers provide customers with outstanding shopping experiences, so it pays close attention to shops’ standings with its policies and reviews their customer service records. If your shop stays in good standing, it increases the likelihood that your listings will be ranked higher in search results.

Your customer service is another aspect that affects your shop’s SEO. When you provide good customer service by responding to customer questions promptly, offering returns and exchanges, and resolving negative feedback, it can have a positive effect on your ranking in search queries.

Do Printables Sell on Etsy?

Printables are a type of digital product that is created with the intention of being printed. An example of a printable would be a planner sheet or coloring page. They are created digitally, saved as a pdf or picture file, and can be printed at home or at a print shop.

If you’re new to creating digital products, printables are the best place to start. They are easy to create and a great source of passive income.

Unlike other digital products, like spreadsheets, you don’t need any special skills or experience to make them. There literally are templates and graphics that you can use!

Yes. You can absolutely make money selling printables on Etsy. A seller made over $1,300 passively from the digital products that they sell in their shop, which include printables.

The key to making money selling printables is creating a product that people actually want and will use.

How do I Make my Etsy Listing Stand out?

Great Photos

Your product photos are EVERYTHING. They’re going to draw in the buyer to visit your listing in a sea of search results. We shop with our eyes first.

Clear, quality photography is the key to changing browsers into visitors and eventually buyers. Make sure your product is the focus of the photo. Use natural light for best quality or get familiar using editing software to create the same effect.

Select the best photo to be the first image as this will be what is shown is searches. You can edit the “thumbnail” by zooming in and out on the edit listing screen. Make sure to choose a crop that best complements your item.

Add Personality to Listing Descriptions

Using keywords in your listing descriptions is important to getting found. Adding personality is important to standing out.

Once a buyer has visited your listing and looked at the photos, they’ll begin reading the description. Naturally, you will want to provide them with the physical information about what they’re buying – the size, color, materials used, etc. Answer any questions a buyer might have including the turnaround time, how to care for the item, and suggested uses.

Along with the information, give the buyers a little something more – explain to them what inspired you to create and what your process looks like. Tell your story! You’re not just selling a product, you’re selling yourself.

Create a Brand

No, your brand is not your logo. Your brand is the overall feeling of your shop and should tell a story about your products. What is the common thread between the items you’re selling?

The items in your Etsy shop should display some sort of cohesion, whether that means creating products in the same category, for the same “ideal client”, or using similar photos to show what you’re selling.

Another way to continue your branding is through packaging. Use shipping materials and branded items to evoke the feeling once your product is delivered. Have an outdoor, Earth-friendly brand selling beanies and scarves?

Consider shipping in repurposed boxes and handwriting a thank you note on recycled paper. Sell high end custom jewelry with a sleek feel? Think about packaging your items in a polished, modern box with an info card listing your social media handles.

Your brand (logo, color palette, mission statement, and feeling) should be evident not only within your Etsy shop, but across everything you do. From social media platforms to emails, a buyer should come in contact with your brand at each piece of your business.

Customer Service

The number one secret in getting raving reviews? Providing amazing customer service by underpromising and overdelivering.

It goes something like this: set your shipping/turnaround times to a little longer than you intend to deliver. Your buyer will notice that you’ve gone above and beyond when they get their item “early”. This also allows for extra buffer time, just in case you have any issues processing or producing an order.

You can also give great service by being attentive, professional, and friendly. Try to answer all messages quickly and use proper grammar and spelling. Address the potential buyer as you would a friend and invite them to ask any further questions. Make them feel comfortable and excited and you’re on your way to making a sale!

How Much Can You Make on Etsy Selling Printables?

You can make anywhere from $50 a week to $1000 a month by selling printables on Etsy but ultimately that all depends on your pricing and product.

Naturally, if you only sell seasonal products, you’ll make more when those products are in season but if you’re selling digital files Etsy that are Evergreen products, you should have a steady flow instead of a sporadic one.

Trending on Etsy 2022

Selling products that have little to no demand can make it difficult for any online business to succeed. Therefore, when brainstorming business ideas, it’s essential to know which trending products to sell online.

We’ll explore 5 trending products for 2022 in several different niches, including health and wellness, fashion, gadgets, and electronics.

1. Face Masks
  • Average selling price: $10-15/pack for surgical masks
  • Monthly global Google search volume: 1,100,000
  • Top countries: United Kingdom, Philippines, United States
  • Ideal target audience: general population
  • Supplier suggestions: Judd Medical (UK), Turmerry (US), Amazon, Alibaba

As the COVID-19 pandemic persists, face masks remain among the most trending products of the year. According to Google Trends, the worldwide search for face masks has gone down but is still going strong.

Google trends for face masks

The market has become competitive, but there are many ways to stand out. Since masks have become a clothing statement nowadays, you can create one-of-a-kind designs to appeal to fashion hobbyists.

Find wholesale suppliers of face masks or consider making your own products at home to sell online. Uniquely designed DIY face masks can attract consumers that might have grown tired of the plain ones.

2. Fitness Fashion Items
  • Average selling price: $10-25
  • Monthly global Google search volume: 79,000 (“sportswear”)
  • Top countries: Ireland, United Kingdom, Denmark
  • Ideal target audience: fitness enthusiasts
  • Supplier suggestions: S&S Activewear (US), Gym Clothes (UK), Alibaba

Thanks to major brands like Lululemon, activewear has become fashionable. Style experts have been calling this new trend athleisure. Forbes has found that customers are valuing convenience over appearance – driving high demand for comfort-oriented products like activewear.

There are tons of fitness fashion items to sell online – from sports bras, t-shirts, gym shorts, leggings to yoga pants. Buy them in bulk from clothing wholesalers like S&S Activewear.

These fashion trends are also more prevalent among millennials, so adopting a solid social media marketing strategy will be crucial to your success. One way to do so is to partner with fitness influencers in the health industry.

3. Wearable Devices
  • Average selling price: $10-30
  • Monthly global Google search volume: 2,000,000 (“smartwatch”)
  • Top countries: Poland, Romania, Portugal
  • Ideal target audience: fitness enthusiasts, tech enthusiasts
  • Supplier suggestions: Alibaba, Global Sources

Wearable devices are gadgets that are used as accessories, such as smartwatches and fitness trackers. Most people buy them to monitor their physical activities, keep track of their health, and receive instant message notifications.

The wearable device trend hasn’t picked up as fast as other gadgets, but sales are slowly growing. More adults in the US are purchasing smartwatches, and the numbers keep rising.

Since these gadgets are pretty expensive to produce, look for dropshipping suppliers for electronics. Alibaba has smartwatches and fitness trackers at an affordable price.

Phone cases can be cheap and easy to manufacture, making them one of the best trending products to sell online for beginners. If you want to produce phone cases by hand, Case Escape has a startup kit for a low-budget option.

On-demand drop shipping services like Printify can also print custom phone cases. The cost for a single unit is quite expensive, which could lower your profit margins. That said, there’s no need to worry about fulfillment and shipping.

To sell phone cases successfully, make sure to come up with unique designs. You also need some visually appealing product photos. With a small budget, set up a home photo studio and use your smartphone to take the pictures.

5. Baby Carriers
  • Average selling price: $50-150
  • Monthly global Google search volume: 101,000
  • Top countries: Australia, Singapore, United Kingdom
  • Ideal target audience: parents and caretakers

A baby carrier helps parents carry their infants while keeping their hands free. It’s also an excellent device for traveling with a baby since you won’t have to bring a stroller.

This trending item has been receiving more attention recently due to innovations to the product. Parents are now looking for ergonomic carriers that support the baby’s natural posture, like Ergobaby. This type of carrier may bring in more profit compared to regular baby slings and wraps.

Top 10 Etsy Shop Ideas For 2022

Home and living

According to Statista, home and living accounted for 25% of Etsy sales during the first half of 2020, making it the top selling category. Not surprising, as most homes morphed into offices and classrooms virtually overnight, there have been spikes in sales of everything from furniture to home organization to candles, puzzles and games.

Have a passion and penchant for crocheting? Perhaps a niche like hammocks and plant hangers speaks to you. Also getting a lot of buzz, according to eRank — personalized decor and gifts. Make your one-of-a-kind idea customizable and you’re already thinking like a seasoned Etsy-ite.

Art and collectibles

Online art sales are forecast to increase to 9.32 billion U.S. dollars by 2024. E-commerce has helped to democratize art for both artists and art lovers. It provides artists exposure beyond the limits of physical galleries, which often require connections to gain entry. It also allows buyers to easily search for endless art across mediums that suit their tastes and budgets.

On Etsy, 21% of sellers fall within the arts and collectibles category. Digital prints, clip art, original drawings, paintings and illustrations are all highly sought-after items, and artists who bring something fresh, exciting and unique to the platform can do very well.

Those who work in the downloadable digital space have the added advantage of delivering their art free of shipping costs, which is attractive to today’s online shoppers.

Craft and supplies

Etsy classifies materials that go into the creation of an item or special occasion as craft supplies. With DIY projects exploding during the pandemic, most craft-related sub-categories saw triple-digit growth year-over-year, from tie-dye to embroidery kits.

Think crochet patterns, knitting patterns, yarns, charms, beads, clip art and paint. Oh, and stickers! Consistently, the number one seller on Etsy offers fun and colorful stickers for personal schedule planners.

The wedding industry took a major hit in 2020 as brides and grooms postponed or scaled down their celebrations. That is expected to start to rebound in 2021, evidenced by a 34% increase in recent searches for wedding dresses on Etsy. With this revitalization comes a need for wedding attire, decor, favors, invitations, cake toppers, centerpieces and bridal party novelties.

Brides-to-be come to Etsy for inspiration, and also for the unique and one-of-a kind things that reflect their personal wedding styles. Exploring niche micro-categories like rustic farmhouse or eco-friendly is something to consider when seeking the attention of this highly engaged audience.

Pet supplies

As of June 2020, pet supplies only accounted for 1% of the sellers on Etsy, presenting what could be a big opportunity as the pandemic pet boom shows no signs of waning. More than two-thirds of U.S. households own at least one pet, and pet owners are increasingly shopping online for their pets.

Unique products like eco-friendly toys, beds, bowls, clothing and accessories are in great demand. Those who reach owners ready and willing to spoil their fur-babies will be poised to grab a share of a market that is expected to reach approximately $99 billion in U.S. sales.

From brilliant hammered and sculpted metals to boho beads and pretty pearls, jewelry is big business on Etsy. In 2020, the category represented 15% of all Etsy sellers. If designing handmade bracelets, earrings or necklaces is your thing, offer your own unique interpretation of what’s trending in the fashion world or bring your own aesthetic and craftsmanship to the marketplace.

The top three jewelry sellers on Etsy, GLDNxLayeredAndLong, CaitlynMinimalist and MignonandMignon, all have a minimalist vibe and offer personalization from initials and names to inspirational symbols and quotes.

Bath and body essentials

Self-care has become one of the biggest buzzwords, reflected in the 2,219% year-over-year increase in searches on Etsy containing the word “relaxation.” Among the most popular Etsy product searches in August 2020 was “face mask,” with over 875,000 queries. Shoppers look to Etsy for self-care that is less complicated and more transparent.

Clean, organic and sustainable beauty rank high with Etsy’s beauty and wellness fans. But before you dive into the beauty pool, make sure to familiarize yourself with the rigorous regulations and policies that govern this category, including the FDA-specific guidelines and Etsy’s own rules.

If you have a flair for fashion design, opening an Etsy shop that showcases your talent and aesthetic may be a great way to test the demand for your concepts. Creating custom t-shirts and clothing that make a statement with bold and fun typography or humorous sayings is a great option for someone with strong graphic design skills.

Tie-dye trended in a big way in 2020, as did sweats and loungewear. Shops that offer comfy tie-dye clothing are nailing it, with “tie-dye sweatsuit” searches up +11,860%. Bottom line: pay attention to what’s happening in lifestyle, fashion and pop culture, then design for the trends.

Accessories are big business on Etsy and sales in this category are dominated by makers who anticipate or identify a trend and then make it their own.

Organza scrunchies, headbands and hair clips are forecast to be fashion girl favorites in 2021, and there’s no doubt that accessories-obsessed audiences will be looking to Etsy for more unique, handmade options than what can be found in pharmacies or mall stores.

It is important to note that as in all Etsy categories, the key to success is often in the keywords used to rank high and stand out in searches. Luckily, Etsy supports its sellers with a trove of useful advice and information, including this Ultimate Guide to Etsy Search.

If your closets and drawers are overflowing with vintage finds like printed silk scarves, oversized sunglasses, stationary, doll clothes or matchbooks, consider sharing your love for all things retro and joining the ranks of Etsy’s vintage sellers. Keep in mind that items must be more than 20 years old to qualify as vintage on Etsy.

Again, it’s often best to choose a niche within the category, such as Swatch watches or vintage barware, and make frequent trips to estate sales, auctions and yard sales to build your inventory. Before you start purging your leg warmers or mix tapes, make sure you know the policies that govern all things vintage on Etsy.

How to Grow Your Etsy Shop

Kruti Patel Goyal, who is the General Manager of Seller Services for Etsy spoke about what sellers can do to grow their businesses on the platform and some of the new features that can help them do just that.

Read the Seller Guidelines Carefully

If you’re just getting started on Etsy, the first step that Patel Goyal recommends is doing some reading. Etsy has always offered guides like its Seller Handbook to help business owners make the most of the platform. And those materials are updated constantly so you’ll always have the most recent information.

Patel Goyal said in an email to Small Business Trends, “Etsy’s Seller Handbook is also an essential resource for sellers just getting started. For instance, our Ultimate Guides to product photography and marketing cover everything you need to know to present your products professionally and get the word out about your new business.”

Schedule Special Promotions

As with any type of ecommerce business, a special sale or discount code can help you incentivize new purchases. And Etsy offers a feature that lets you choose which type of promotion to offer so you can schedule it for your shop.

Patel Goyal explains, “Special offers can help sellers capture the attention of shoppers and create a loyal following. With Etsy’s tools, sellers can schedule and run “percentage off” or “free shipping” sales that encourage shoppers to add more to their carts.”

Automatically Share Updates on Social Media

From there, you can set your shop to automatically send out updates about promotions to your social media channels. This lets you save time while still getting the word out about your special offers.

Patel Goyal says, “Sellers can also share these offers across their social networks through our tools. Last year, we launched a new social media tool that makes it easy for sellers to share their listings, sales and promotions, and celebrate shop milestones across social media directly from within their Etsy Shop Manager and the Sell on Etsy app.

We know Etsy sellers are busy and the Sell on Etsy app can help them stay on top of their businesses, from answering questions from buyers to paying bills on the go.”

Come Up with a Unique Photo Style

Photography is an essential part of any successful Etsy shop. The site’s seller guides and handbook offer some basic tips for brushing up on your photography skills. But you also have to come up with a specific and recognizable style that works for your specific product line.

You might consider adding some props that show scale and fit with your branding. Or you could come up with a unique background that makes your images stand out without distracting from the actual product.

Optimize Your Shop for SEO

SEO is also a big part of growing an Etsy shop, since most shoppers use the search or browse functions on the site to find product options. The exact SEO guidelines might change periodically. But you can’t go wrong by sticking to the basic concepts of mentioning the most relevant keywords as early and as often as possible within your titles, description, tags, and images.

Join an Etsy Team

To continue learning and growing along with the Etsy community, Patel Goyal also recommends connecting with other sellers. The platform’s Teams feature gives you an easy and fun way to do just that.

Patel Goyal says, “There are so many ways to find support on Etsy, particularly for sellers who are just getting started. For example, Etsy Teams are self-organized groups of sellers who share tips, run local events, and organize grassroots campaigns. Joining an Etsy Team gives sellers instant access to a community of other entrepreneurs who’ve been in their shoes.”

Try Promoted Listings

For a quick sales boost, Etsy also offers paid advertising options where you can boost the visibility of a particular product or products. This can be a worthwhile exercise at least to see what type of sales increase it leads to and use it to supplement your other marketing efforts as you grow your shop.

Get into Google Shopping

Outside of Etsy, there are also some worthwhile marketing and advertising tools you can make use of. For instance, you can set your products to show up in Google Shopping searches. Then you can pay for Google ads to boost the visibility of those products when people enter relevant search terms into Google.

Sell Your Products at Local Craft Fairs and Events

Etsy sellers can also boost sales by expanding where they sell products. If you sell items at craft fairs or retail shops, you can even use a Square card reader to easily connect those in-person purchases to your shop.

Patel Goyal says, “We also know that many Etsy sellers want to connect with buyers in person, and build their brands on their own websites as they grow. We recently launched a partnership with Square so that Etsy shop owners have a solution for accepting payments wherever they’re selling.”

Launch Your Own Dedicated Website

Once you’ve grown your shop on Etsy, you might also consider adding your own website so you can personalize and control more of the shopping experience. In fact, Etsy also offers a tool for helping shop owners in this area.

Patel Goyal adds, “For sellers ready to launch their own website, we offer Pattern, our suite of website building tools. Sellers can choose from beautiful, customizable templates and sync their Etsy inventory so they can grow their brand while managing all their orders in the same place.”
