How Can I Build my Brand Identity From Scratch?
Building a brand from the ground up that stands out is no easy task. What should it look like? How should it make people feel? Will it resonate with my target audience?
These are questions that inevitably come up when you start thinking about how to connect the dots between what you’re selling and who you’re trying to reach.
When you think about it, people have personal brands, too. We each have a name, a face, a style, a way of communicating, and with these traits, we make different impressions on different people.
Likewise, businesses have names, products, logos, colors, fonts, voices, and reputations that make up what they are and affect how they’re perceived.
You can’t effectively approach how to create a brand without being consistent and maintaining that consistency as you extend your brand to every part of your business. The best way to build a brand starts with establishing what that consistency is going to look like and the feeling you want it to evoke.
1. Research your target audience and your competitors
Before you start making any decisions about how to create a business brand, you need to understand the current market, i.e., who your potential customers and current competitors are.
There are many ways to do this step of how to make a brand:
- Google your product or service category and analyze the direct and indirect competitors that come up.
- Check subreddits that relate to your customers and eavesdrop on their conversations and product recommendations.
- Talk to people who are part of your target market and ask them what brands they buy from in your space.
- Look at the relevant social media accounts or pages your target audience follows and are receptive to.
- Go shopping online or offline and get a feel for how your customers would browse and buy products.
As you go about your research, make a note of:
- Who your “lowest hanging fruit” customers are—the ones you could most easily sell to.
- Who your top-of-mind competitors are—the brands that are established and known in the market.
- How your customers speak and what they talk about—the interests they have and the language they express them in.
It’s important to have a handle on this before moving forward, as it will inform what your brand should focus on and how it can position itself apart from competitors.
2. Pick your focus and personality
You can’t establish your brand to be everything to everyone, especially at the start. It’s important to find your focus and let that inform all the other parts of your brand as you build it.
Here are some questions and branding exercises to get you thinking about the focus and tone of your brand.
What’s your positioning statement?
A positioning statement is one or two lines that stake your claim in the market. This isn’t necessarily something you put on your website or business card—it’s just to help you answer the right questions about your brand and aids in creating your brand’s tagline.
What words would you associate with your brand?
One way to look at how to build your brand is to imagine your brand as a person. What would he or she be like? What kind of personality would your customers be attracted to?
This will help inform your voice on social media and the tone of all your creative, both visual and written.
A fun and useful exercise for how to create a new brand is pitching three to five adjectives that describe the type of brand that might resonate with your audience.
3. Choose your business name
What’s in a name? Depending on the kind of business you want to start, you can make the case that your name matters very little or it matters a lot.
As we’ve said before, a brand is so much more than a name. The personality, actions, and reputation of your brand identity are really what give the name meaning in the market.
But as a small business owner, your company’s name is probably one of the first big commitments you have to make. It’ll impact your brand logo, your domain, your marketing, and your trademark registration, if you decide to go that route (it’s harder to trademark generic brand names that literally describe what you sell).
Ideally, you want a store name that’s hard to imitate and even harder to confuse with existing players in the market. If you have any plans to expand the product lines you offer down the road, consider keeping your business name broad so that it’s easier to pivot, rather than choosing a brand name based on your product category.
You can use our business name generator to brainstorm some names, or try one (or a combination) of the following approaches:
- Make up a word, like Pepsi.
- Reframe an unrelated word, like Apple for computers.
- Use a suggestive word or metaphor, likeBuffer.
- Describe it literally (caution: easy to imitate),like The Shoe Company.
- Alter a word by removing letters, adding letters, or using Latin endings, likeTumblr (Tumbler) or Activia.
- Create an acronym from a longer name, like HBO (Home Box Office).
- Combine two words: Pinterest (pin + interest) or Snapple (snappy + apple)
Since your brand name will also affect the domain/URL of your website, be sure to shop around to see what’s available before deciding on a domain name.
It’s also a good idea to run your name by a focus group of close people, if for no other reason than to make sure it doesn’t have an unintended meaning or is too similar to something else that you might’ve missed.
4. Write a slogan
A catchy slogan is a nice-to-have asset—something brief and descriptive you can use as a tagline in your social media bios, website header, custom business cards, and anywhere else where you’ve got very few words to make a big impact.
Keep in mind that you can always change your slogan as you find new angles for marketing—Pepsi has gone through over 30 slogans in the past few decades.
A good slogan is short, catchy, and makes a strong impression to boost brand awareness. Here are some ways to approach writing a slogan of your own:
- Stake your claim. Death Wish Coffee: “The World’s Strongest Coffee”
- Make it a Metaphor. Redbull: “Redbull gives you wings.”
- Adopt your customers’ attitude. Nike: “Just do it.”
- Leverage labels. Cards Against Humanity: “A party game for horrible people.”
- Write a rhyme. Folgers Coffee: “The best part of waking up is Folgers in your cup.”
- Describe it literally. Aritzia: “Women’s fashion boutique.”
5. Choose the look of your brand (colors and font)
Once you’ve got a name down, you’ll need to think about your brand design—how you’ll visually represent your brand—namely your colors and typography. This will come in handy when you start to make your own website.
Choosing your colors
Colors don’t just define the look of your brand, they also convey the feeling you want to communicate and help you make it consistent across everything you do. You’ll want to choose colors that differentiate you from direct competitors to avoid confusing consumers.
Color psychology isn’t an exact science, but it does help to inform the choices you make, especially when it comes to the color you pick for your brand logo.
It’s important to consider how legible white and black text will be over your color palette and how colored text might look over white and black backgrounds. Try using a tool like Coolors to brainstorm colors that work together. Grab the hex codes to keep handy, and sift through different shades to find the ones you like.
Choosing your fonts
At this point, it’s also good to look at fonts you might want to use on your website.
The best way to build a brand when it comes to fonts is by keeping it simple. Pick two fonts at most to avoid confusing visitors: one for headings and one for body text (this doesn’t include the font you might use in your brand logo).
6. Design your brand logo
A brand logo design is probably one of the first things that comes to mind when you think about building a new brand. And for good reason: it’s the face of your company after all and could potentially be everywhere that your brand exists.
Ideally, you’ll want to create your brand with a logo that’s unique, identifiable, and scalable to work at all sizes (something often overlooked).
Consider all the places where your brand’s logo needs to exist: from your website, your Facebook page’s profile picture, YouTube channel banner, to even the little “favicons” you see in your current browser tab.
If you have a text logo as your Instagram avatar, for example, it’ll be almost impossible to read. To make your life easier, create a square version of your brand logo with an icon element that remains recognizable even at smaller sizes.
7. Apply your branding across your business
Applying your branding across your business gives it a cohesive brand story. A brand story represents who your business is and what it stands for. It sets the stage for every interaction customers have with your brand, in-store and online.
In Shopify’s research on what wins buyer and customer trust, we found that buyers shopping on an online store for the first time often look for a business’s mission and purpose to see if they share any values with the business (e.g., sustainability).
They will turn to its About Us page to learn more about who they’re buying from and, for more socially conscious customers, how the business is run. If your business has a brand story, share it, because it can help the shopper feel reassured yours is a legitimate business.
When building a new brand, your positioning statement can get you started, but you’ll want to ask yourself a few questions for your brand story:
- What motivated me to start my business?
- Why does the company exist?
- How do we contribute to the world?
- What is the story behind my business the customer should know?
Not every business is mission driven, but if you create your brand with a mission or values, share your brand story and tell customers why the business was started. Look at the businesses TOMS and Coca-Cola, the first a mission-driven brand, the second not so much.
TOMS, a footwear and accessories company, is “in business to improve lives.” TOMS first charitable program, One for One, where it donates shoes to children in need, and more recently is making donations to the COVID-19 Global Giving Fund, among other charitable initiatives. When a shopper purchases a product from TOMS, they can come away feeling good because they believe in the cause their purchase is contributing toward.

What is WooCommerce And How Does it Work?
WooCommerce is a free plugin for WordPress. It lets you turn a basic website into a website with a shop. WordPress can’t do that by itself. If you install and activate the WooCommerce plugin you can add products, a shopping cart, and a checkout.
You will also be joining a lot of other WooCommerce store owners. It’s the most popular e-Commerce plugin for WordPress. It powers over 30% of all the world’s e-Commerce stores.
Once you have WooCommerce working with your website, an extra range of WooCommerce extensions are available to you. WooCommerce extensions are specialized WordPress plugins, designed to work alongside when the WooCommerce plugin is installed.
They let your online store do more things. They can also let your store work with other programs, like your accounting program and your email marketing program.
There are many WooCommerce plugins available for use. The main sources are from:
- The official WooCommerce Extension library (both free and paid extensions)
- The plugins repository at WordPress.org (free extensions)
- WooCommerce Plugins on Code Canyon (paid extensions)
Why Should You Choose WooCommerce For Your Online Store?
There are plenty of eCommerce plugins to choose from, so why choose WooCommerce? Simply put, WooCommerce offers WordPress site owners unparallel compatibility, flexibility, and ease of use. But let’s dive a little deeper into the benefits of WooCommerce. Here are 10 reasons to use WooCommerce for your online store.
1. WooCommerce Pricing
When a new retailer is choosing a platform, price is likely to be a major factor. Ecommerce applications range from free to many thousands of dollars per year, but that difference in price isn’t necessarily related to the capability of the application. Thus, the first reason to choose WooCommerce that we’re highlighting is that it’s free to use.
WooCommerce is competitive with leading enterprise eCommerce applications, but because it’s free, any business or entrepreneur can take advantage of its capabilities without having to commit to expensive support contracts or proprietary software licenses.
You should note that certain third-party applications for payments with WooCommerce and other extensions may cost money, but this will not be directed to WooCommerce themselves.

2. WooCommerce Is Modular
To really understand what WooCommerce is, we have to examine its modular framework. Just like WordPress, WooCommerce includes a rich set of features that can be extended with the addition of plugins.
Retailers who use WooCommerce benefit twice from this modularity: they have access to thousands of WordPress plugins and themes as well as hundreds of eCommerce-specific extensions built just for WooCommerce.
The genius of a modular system is that it helps to cultivate a community of developers who build extensions to add specific functionality, something that isn’t possible with monolithic applications. With the right plugins, setting up a WooCommerce store can be the perfect eCommerce platform for every retailer.
Those plugins may expand functionality in regards to shipping, payments, how products are handled, and more. WooCommerce themselves have developed and recommended several additional plugins when using their store.

3. WooCommerce Is WordPress
“But isn’t WooCommerce just WordPress?”
The implication being that because WooCommerce is constrained by its parent application, it can’t be as good as a purpose-built eCommerce application.
In reality, the link between WordPress and WooCommerce plugin is actually a benefit of WooCommerce. WordPress is hugely popular because it’s so flexible and functional.
Millions of businesses choose to use WordPress because it provides the best foundation for their sites. It’s fast, secure, and easy to use. The compatibility between your existing WordPress themes and WooCommerce themes will make for a very smooth integration.
WooCommerce inherits all of the strength and reliability of WordPress and uses it to build a world-class eCommerce experience for retailers and their customers.

4. WooCommerce Can Be Used To Sell Anything
Another fun way to answer someone who asks, “What is WooCommerce?”— It’s a way to sell anything.
WooCommerce is incredibly flexible. If you want to sell something, you can sell it with WooCommerce. That includes physical products, digital products, subscriptions, appointments, and much more. Whether you intend to sell a single digital product or an enormous variety of physical products, WooCommerce is the Swiss Army Knife of eCommerce applications.

5. WooCommerce Has A Vibrant Developer Community
Both WooCommerce and WordPress are open source, which means that retailers are free to change or add core features, build new extensions, and create custom themes. For some less popular eCommerce applications, it is difficult to find developers capable of doing that work and if you can find a developer, they are expensive to hire.
WooCommerce advantage here is that retailers benefit from a large pool of developers and WooCommerce professionals. If you need to make changes to your WooCommerce store, it won’t be hard to find someone to do the work for you. And further, its widespread use and network of developers makes achieving optimal WooCommerce security much easier.

6. WooCommerce Includes Powerful Analytics
Another way to address the question of “How does WooCommerce work?” is through analytics. Built-in analytics are another WooCommerce advantage, because the more you know about your customers and the way they interact with your store and its products, the better.
Out of the box, WooCommerce provides an extensive set of analytics displayed in a clear and intuitive interface. Additionally, it’s straightforward to integrate WooCommerce with external analytics services like Google Analytics with extensions.
7. WooCommerce Grows With Your Business
When choosing an eCommerce application, it is a good idea to think about the future of your business. It might be small now, but in time it will grow and you should choose an application that is capable of supporting a busy store without imposing too much complexity in the early days.
One of the benefits of WooCommerce is that it supports stores ranging from the tiny to the immense. It can scale from a few products to many thousands, and from a handful of shoppers a day to hundreds of shoppers per second. As your WooCommerce website grows, so can the functionality of your online store.

8. WooCommerce Provides World-Class Content Management
As you might expect from an eCommerce application based on the world’s most popular content management system (CMS), WooCommerce is no slouch where content is concerned.
Content is an important component of eCommerce marketing, sales optimization, and search engine optimization. Together WordPress and WooCommerce offer a wide variety of content management options, including blogging, landing pages, email marketing, and product descriptions. WooCommerce-compatible SEO plugins like Yoast WooCommerce SEO make it easy for retailers to optimize their content for search.
9. WooCommerce Is Fast
WordPress and WooCommerce can provide a fast and responsive eCommerce experience for online stores of all sizes. This is a key benefit of WooCommerce.
You can also speed up your WooCommerce store by combining it with performance-optimized WooCommerce hosting that’s specifically engineered to maximize performance.
Standard web hosting is capable of supporting WooCommerce, but it cannot provide the highly optimized PHP, MySQL, server, and network environments necessary for a responsive low-latency eCommerce experience.
10. WooCommerce Is Made For Selling
Another WooCommerce advantage is that it’s designed for selling. It includes everything a new eCommerce retailer needs to get up and running:
- Over 100 payment gateways that can be easily integrated with your store.
- Multiple WooCommerce shipping methods with configurable shipping zones and shipping classes.
- An intuitive backend for stock management, refunds, order management, email management, and everything else you need to efficiently manage your ecommerce store.
- Choose from thousands of configurable and mobile-friendly free and premium WooCommerce themes or build a custom theme to give your store a unique look.
- World-class documentation that provides the guidance for new ecommerce retailers that need to get up-and-running.
What Does Product Designer do?
A product designer is responsible for the user experience of a product, usually taking direction on the business goals and objectives from product management. Although typically associated with the visual/tactile aspects of a product, product designers can sometimes also play a role in the information architecture and system design of a product as well.
A product designer may also be referred to as a User Experience Designer, Customer Experience Architect, User Interface Designer, Interaction Designer, or Information Architect depending on the type of company, the size, and diversity of the design department and the particular individual’s area of expertise.
While companies can always benefit from a product designer, they play a particularly important role during key stages of product development. During the initial design and proof-of-concept phase, they can translate the goal of the product into a functional user experience and provide requirements feedback regarding what must be in place for users to achieve their goals.
As a product grows and adds more features and functionality, they can ensure the user experience is intuitive and reduce points of friction. And once a product is mature they can help refine the user experience and make the product more efficient to improve page load speeds, etc.
Product designers are seen as a luxury for some companies that might delay adding someone in that role until further in their lifecycle, while others might hire a product designer before they even add a product manager. Product design can also be outsourced relatively easily, so many companies rely on outside consultants and agencies for this function.

What Are The Pros And Cons of WooCommerce?
WooCommerce has become hugely popular over the last few years, with thousands of business owners around the world adopting the platform to fulfil their own eCommerce needs.
After all, WooCommerce gives businesses the ability to sell products of almost any kind, whether it’s digital content (music and video) or physical items delivered through a direct-from-business or drop-shipping model.
Pros Of WooCommerce
First, let’s look at all the aspects of the WooCommerce platform that could make it the right platform for your eCommerce store.
Free & Open Source
These days, there are so many costs associated with the start-up and running of a successful business.
For that reason, one huge positive of WooCommerce is that it is both free and open source.
While there are paid aspects to the platform, being open source means that there are plenty of themes and useful modifications produced by fellow WooCommerce users that others (like you!) can use for free.
These themes have all been optimized for use by other eCommerce store owners, so you know that they are tried, tested and of a high quality.
Being open source also means that modifications and themes are updated on a regular basis. So, when the time comes to give your store a visual refresh, you’ll have no shortage of great options available to you.
Easy To Use
Of course, whether you have an existing eCommerce site or are looking into setting one up for the first time, you’ll want to get it up and running as soon as you can.
You may be concerned, though, by your own limited eCommerce website design experience and by WooCommerce’s functionality.
Luckily, WooCommerce is incredibly easy to use, especially for those with previous experience of working with WordPress, which WooCommerce plugs into.
Listing store items with WooCommerce is as easy as heading to ‘add product’, creating a title and short description for the product, specifying whether it’s a physical or digital product, and setting the price.
Further customization is simple, too – product images and design features can all be changed fairly easily.
And if you do run into any obstacles, there is no shortage of WooCommerce help available through WooCommerce Support. A quick chat with a member of the WooCommerce team is sure to resolve your issues before too long.
Simple Reporting
One of the issues that sellers regularly run into when operating an online store is keeping track of income, profits, inventory, sales, and other such factors.
Luckily, WooCommerce does all of that for you!
With WooCommerce, users are able to access clear and simple reports which give you plenty of insight into how your store is doing.
These reports can be accessed at any time through the WooCommerce website or app, and will offer you a much clearer look at how your online store’s performance e.g.:
- which products are selling well
- how many visits your store is getting
- how many of those visits are converting into actual sales
- frequent updates on how much stock you have left in your store inventory
So, WooCommerce is ideal if you’re looking for an eCommerce platform that takes the guesswork out of store statistics.
A Handy Mobile App
A huge positive for busy company owners is that WooCommerce can be accessed via a mobile app.
While the app doesn’t allow users to make thematic changes to their store, it does let them access reports, stock numbers, sales details and so forth ‘on the go’.
Perfect, then, for giving you a valuable snapshot of your eCommerce store’s performance when you are out and about, away from the office.
Cons Of WooCommerce
To help you make a more informed decision about whether or not it’s the platform for you, we now dive into the more negative aspects that might make you consider WooCommerce unsuitable for you and your business.
Premium Extensions And Hidden Costs
While there are plenty of free WooCommerce themes available, the highest quality and most optimized themes are a little pricier.
In fact, when buying an official theme through WordPress – a purchase that will allow you the highest level of WooCommerce support, speed and SEO – you could be looking at a cost of up to $120 each.
This price tag could put you off if you’re looking to keep things as low-cost as possible, even if there are benefits to these premium options.
Further costs could also come in the form of plugins required for payment gateway options.
WordPress Knowledge Is A Must
As WooCommerce is a WordPress plugin, you will definitely need fairly extensive knowledge of the WordPress platform to take full advantage of everything that WooCommerce has to offer.
WooCommerce and WordPress go hand-in-hand, so if you’re unsure how to use WordPress or currently run your eCommerce store using a different platform, WooCommerce may not be for you.
