Entrepreneurs drive change. They provide ideas, initiative, and leadership that invigorate development and transform society. Young, growing firms lead economic change by propelling gains in productivity and employment. In doing so, they reshape attitudes, social relations, and institutions. They are therefore crucial to building prosperous societies that can deliver the opportunity to all.

As a dynamic part of the private sector, entrepreneurs act in ways that advance democracy, both directly and indirectly. Directly, they often assume leadership roles in society. With their initiative, problem-solving ability, and new perspectives, they can become a leading constituency for reform.

Indirectly, the opportunities that arise from participating in free markets support the development of an entrepreneurial class with a stake in society. Furthermore, an entrepreneurial culture founded on personal initiative, independence, and service fosters a political culture of citizen engagement.

These positive effects on democracy occur at three levels: through the interrelation of economic and political systems, through social evolution, and through individual action.

How does Entrepreneurship Help in Improving the Economy of the Country?

In entrepreneurship, unutilized resources, labor, and capital are utilized most efficiently. Entrepreneurs take on risks in the hopes of making profit, or in the case of social entrepreneurship, of solving a problem facing communities. So the significance of entrepreneurs and the role of entrepreneurship go beyond the business world.

The importance of entrepreneurship is so broad that it’s quite tough to explain all the aspects of it in a short blog post. However, we would like to shed some light on the importance and role of entrepreneurship in economic development and society.

1. Entrepreneurship Accelerates Economic Growth

Entrepreneurs are important to market economies because they can act as the wheels of the economic growth of the country.

By creating new products and services, they stimulate new employment, which ultimately results in the acceleration of economic development. So a public policy that encourages and supports entrepreneurship should be considered important for economic growth.

A large number of new jobs and opportunities are created by entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship creates a huge amount of entry-level jobs that are very much important to turn unskilled jobholders into skilled ones. It also prepares and provides experienced workers to large industries. The increase in the total employment of a country largely depends on the rise of entrepreneurship. So the role of entrepreneurship in creating new job opportunities is huge.

By bringing innovation to every aspect of businesses, entrepreneurial ventures enhance production utilizing the existing resources in the most effective ways. Entrepreneurs develop new markets by introducing new and improved products, services, and technology. Thus, they help generate new wealth and add more to the national income. So the government can offer the citizens more national benefits.

2. Entrepreneurship Promotes Innovation

Through the right practices of research and development, entrepreneurs bring new innovation that opens the door of new ventures, markets, products, and technology. Entrepreneurs have a role to play in solving problems that existing products and technology have not yet solved. So by producing new products and services or bringing innovation to existing products and services, entrepreneurship has the potential to improve peoples’ lives.

3. Entrepreneurship Can Promote Social Changes

Entrepreneurs change or break the tradition or cultures of society and reduce the dependency on obsolete methods, systems, and technologies. Basically, entrepreneurs are the pioneer of bringing new technologies and systems that ultimately bring changes to society. These changes are associated with improved lifestyle, generous thinking, better morale, and higher economic choice. In this way, social changes gradually impact national and global changes. So the importance of social entrepreneurship must be appreciated.

At Duke, the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Initiative has a special program aimed specifically at Social Innovation. The program is “building upon and extending the strengths of the university to create a transformational learning environment to inspire, prepare, and support entrepreneurial leaders and scholars to turn knowledge into action in pursuing innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing problems.”

For example, one of the most recent projects of the initiative is the Duke-UNICEF Innovation Accelerator, which is focused on entrepreneurship for menstrual health and hygiene for women and girls in vulnerable communities in three African countries.

4. Entrepreneurship Promotes Research and Industrial Development

Along with producing new business ideas and thinking out of the box, entrepreneurs also promote research and development. They cultivate their ideas, shape them into a new form, and turn them into a successful business endeavors.

Entrepreneurs are a special kind of people, they are always working to discover new ideas and improve existing ones. But their impact extends beyond their own companies and ventures: when an entrepreneur develops a new product, service, or idea, others often follow (and sometimes even further refine the ideas).

Innovation and industry is accelerated through the combined action of entrepreneurs. They can motivate each other, share ideas and inspiration, and share planning to establish new industries. The change of the existing industrial climate opens the doors for others at the same time.  Therefore, we see that the importance of entrepreneurship to the economy is multi-functional.

5. Entrepreneurship Develops and Improves Existing Enterprises

We often think of entrepreneurs as inventing totally new products and ideas, but they also impact existing businesses. Since entrepreneurs think differently, they can come up with innovative ways to expand and develop existing enterprises. For example, modernizing production processes, implementing new technology in the overall distribution and marketing processes, and helping existing enterprises to utilize existing resources in more efficient ways.

What is Democracy in Entrepreneurship?

A democracy entrepreneur is a leader and relentless, pragmatic, visionary who uses innovative, entrepreneurial techniques, approaches and solutions to address a challenge in our democracy and/or advance reform, to promote equity and enable broader, more inclusive, active participation. Anyone can be a democratic entrepreneur.

The Democracy Entrepreneurs organization and model have been honed after hundreds of personal conversations with democracy entrepreneurs, policy experts, democracy activists, and social entrepreneurs who have experience in building such a movement. The research suggests that many of the seeds of democratic reform have already been planted – a new generation of dedicated, moral leaders is working to improve the scaffolding of our democracy, but they desperately need a supportive environment.

There is no shortage of good ideas in this space, as think tanks and institutes have suggested common-sense fixes for decades that have gone largely unaddressed. Our democracy needs creative “doers” making change (often at the local or state levels) within the force of a broader movement. And we need to support these capable leaders with a thriving ecosystem of funders, peers, and organizational knowledge which will help us today and also build a pipeline of such democracy entrepreneurs for future threats to our democracy.

How can Entrepreneurship Help in Creating More Goods and Services?

Entrepreneurs are a rare species. Even in innovation-driven economies, only 1–2% of the workforce starts a business in any given year. Yet entrepreneurs, particularly innovative entrepreneurs, are vital to the competitiveness of the economy.

The gains of entrepreneurship are only realized, however, if the business environment is receptive to innovation. In addition, policymakers need to prepare for the potential job losses that can occur in the medium term through “creative destruction” as entrepreneurs strive for increased productivity.

Entrepreneurs often create new technologies, develop new products or process innovations, and open up new markets. There are many examples of radical innovations introduced by entrepreneurs such as Pierre Omidyar (eBay), Larry Page and Sergey Brin (Google), Larry Ellison (Oracle), Dietmar Hopp and Hasso Plattner (SAP), Bill Gates (Microsoft), Steve Jobs (Apple), and Stelios Haji-Ioannou (easyJet), to name just a few.

Radical innovations often lead to economic growth. Entrepreneurs who bring innovations to the market offer a key value-generating contribution to economic progress. Compared with incumbent firms, new firms invest more in searching for new opportunities. Existing firms might be less likely to innovate because of organizational inertia, which numbs their responsiveness to market changes, or because new goods would compete with their established range of products.

Incumbent firms often miss out, sometimes intentionally, on opportunities to adopt new ideas because of the fear of cannibalizing their own markets. For inventors and innovators (who sometimes come from established firms) setting up their own businesses often appears to be the only way to commercialize their ideas.

Entrepreneurs share certain traits, such as creativity and a high tolerance for the uncertainty that comes with developing new products. Four personality characteristics are particularly important for becoming an entrepreneur: willingness to bear risks, openness to experience, belief in their ability to control their own future (internal locus of control), and extraversion.

Entrepreneurs are significantly more likely to have these traits for the following reasons:

  • The success of each investment, particularly in innovative activities, is unpredictable. Every entrepreneurial decision is risky, and success is never assured. In contrast to ordinary managers, entrepreneurs often put their own funds on the line and risk losing money if the investment fails. They have to be willing to bear risks.
  • People who are open to experience—who seek new experiences and are eager to explore novel ideas—are creative, innovative, and curious. These attributes are vital for starting a new venture.
  • Locus of control measures generalized expectations about internal and external control. People with an external locus of control believe that their future is determined randomly or by the external environment, not by their own actions. People with an internal locus of control believe that they shape their future outcomes through their own actions. Entrepreneurs need to have an internal locus of control to propel them.
  • People who are assertive, ambitious, energetic, and seek leadership roles (in the so-called “Big Five” approach this trait is called extraversion), tend to be sociable as well, enabling them to develop social networks more easily and to forge stronger partnerships with clients and suppliers. All of these traits—being assertive, seeking leadership, and developing networks—are important if individual aims to become an entrepreneur.

How does Entrepreneurship Help the Government?

Entrepreneurs are not only provided with opportunities that benefit themselves, but their work also develops the economy.

1. Entrepreneurs provide job opportunities

One of the main reasons why individuals tend to become entrepreneurs is because they are unable to find suitable jobs. Entrepreneurs create new businesses and in turn create opportunities of employment for people. Many people have been made redundant due to COVID-19, thus starting a business is an opportunity to either work for themselves or they can help support and develop an entrepreneur’s business.

Not only are entrepreneurs able to generate an income for themselves but they also employ other individuals in their business operations. Therefore, people who did not have a job before will have a chance to have a career.

2. Entrepreneurs increase competition & boost productivity

Entrepreneurs challenge existing firms to become more competitive as they often enter the market with lower prices and greater product variety. This can cause existing players in the market to re-assess their operations, increase their value, lower costs, and become more efficient.

Increased competition in an economy is advantageous because firms and individuals will source methods to better improve their operations. The new business formation of entrepreneurs with high-growth ambitions and innovation will push established firms to increase their productivity and enhance their performance.

3. Entrepreneurs create new business & new markets

As the trends in the world continue to change, people’s demands will change, giving entrepreneurs an opportunity to start new businesses.

If a marketplace is saturated, this can result in entrepreneurs seeking new markets for their services and products, which can be considered a positive impact on the economy. Entrepreneurs may even create entirely new industries that become the engines of future growth.

4. Entrepreneurs add national income

The new products or services created by entrepreneurs result in new wealth from the new markets. Additionally, higher earnings due to entrepreneurship can help boost national income. This is in the form of higher government spending and tax revenue, resulting in investment in struggling sectors and human capital.

5. Entrepreneurs introduce innovative technologies

Individuals often resort to entrepreneurship to provide niche solutions or to use their creativity, technological knowledge, or finances to generate their own income. Innovative ideas and inventiveness are foundational driving factors for entrepreneurs which result in great contribution to the economy.

Like some of the legendary names in business, Bill Gates (Microsoft), Larry Ellison (Oracle), Steve Jobs (Apple) and many more, entrepreneurs create innovations. New and improved products enable new markets which often lead to economic growth.

What are the Role of Entrepreneurs and How They Help in the Growth of Society?

An entrepreneur is an individual who creates and grows a business through creative ideas. Entrepreneurs play key roles besides generating income as they grow their businesses.

Entrepreneur identifies a commercial need in their community, crafts a business idea and takes the lead role to start their business. If a business idea doesn’t involve creating a product that was insufficient in the market, it typically involves using technological innovations to make a product or service more easily accessible.

Here are 10 entrepreneurial roles to familiarize yourself with before you set up a business:

1. Initiating and leading business activities

Initiating and growing a business to its maturity is a traditional role for entrepreneurs. As societies progress, people regularly develop new needs that an entrepreneur can satisfy with their business ideas. This business idea can provide either services or products that would benefit the community.

Identifying a gap and planning how to address it helps entrepreneurs initiate new business ventures at any opportunity. They must understand every aspect of the business, including making critical decisions, setting a good example for employees and resolving conflicts.

2. Allocating employees’ duties

From the onset of a business, an entrepreneur needs to allocate their employees’ responsibilities effectively. Hiring qualified and competent staff requires a great deal of care, especially for small businesses. An entrepreneur is also responsible for organizing a business structure and environment that helps each employee maximize their potential. The success of a business venture often relies on its employees’ contributions.

Therefore, defining your team’s role and responsibilities is a vital entrepreneurial role to exercise for maximum business productivity. Allocation of duties also minimizes team conflicts, maximizes production and helps boost employee morale.

3. Forecasting business changes

Most businesses face some kind of uncertainty as they develop. An entrepreneur’s role in this aspect is to anticipate any challenges and address them as quickly as possible. Forecasting is important because it helps the entrepreneur make decisions such as reducing or increasing stock for a product, procuring updated software or making credit acquisition decisions.

4. Creating jobs

When an entrepreneur sets up or expands a business, they decide which employees they need to hire. Entrepreneurs consider factors such as who oversees processes and who can fulfill administrative tasks. Even when an entrepreneur does not directly employ staff to work in a physical location, they may still need to consider people who can work as a service provider, a software salesperson or a programmer.

5. Identifying business opportunities

Entrepreneurs regularly seek out opportunities that can grow or boost sales for their businesses. They identify which product to add and which market to expand to. Entrepreneurs should listen to their potential clients and find opportunities to develop tailored products that cater to their clients’ needs.

By doing a little competitive analysis, an entrepreneur can find out what other businesses in the area are doing and how they are succeeding. This process might include a physical survey or reading publications about trends in a specific industry. Talking to customers also makes it easier to identify their frustrations and experiences, which an entrepreneur can use to improve their businesses.

6. Creating and sharing wealth

Starting a business involves a network of activities. Whether an entrepreneur runs a small business operator or an established company, many spend money from savings and gain capital from family, friends or banks when they start out. Investors often look forward to investing in small but potentially viable businesses, while lenders grow their own businesses by earning interest from capital extended to entrepreneurs. The cycle of such fund mobilization can help the local economy build wealth.

7. Improving the standard of living

Economies are used to measure living standards. These living standards can improve through the developments or services that an entrepreneur brings through their business.

Innovations that can reduce the cost of creating a product also reduces the product’s price while allowing the business to maintain the same profits, which allows customers’ to spend less money. When people save money by acquiring a product at a cheaper price, they can use the savings for other purposes. This is an indication of an improved standard of living.

8. Taking up and reducing business risk

When entrepreneurs start a business, they spend time analyzing and researching to make sure their ideas succeed. An entrepreneur’s role is to eliminate the risk of business failure by taking measures to reduce as much risk as possible.

Such measures include bringing competent and committed employees in the company, obtaining insurance coverage for the most risk-prone segments of the business and getting more investors motivated to grow the business.

9. Building strategic partnerships

An entrepreneur must create a business environment where partnerships can thrive, which helps their business succeed. Generating and closing new business leads is an essential entrepreneurial skill. Entrepreneur should maximize their marketing capacity, spend time talking to qualified potential partners and regularly call every prospect. Creating strategic partnerships can help entrepreneurs make better decisions for their companies and even obtain more capital.

10. Digitalizing business operations

Because technology evolves so quickly, a business product or service can be rendered obsolete due to new technology’s entry. Entrepreneur is responsible for continuously updating the technology they use in their business processes or activities. Entrepreneur roles regarding technology include:

  • Researching the most recent methods of reducing production cost
  • Disposing of equipment that is not improving profitability
  • Organizing training for staff to help them familiarize themselves with the latest technological programs in the market to improve efficiency
  • Using the most popular and recent marketing medium to ensure you reach your target group

What is Democratic Leadership in Entrepreneurship?

Democratic leadership is an open leadership style that empowers group members in the decision-making process. If you work in an industry that benefits from open discussion and sharing of opinions, you may want to consider this leadership style.

Also called “shared leadership” or “participative leadership,” democratic leadership encourages each team member to participate in decision-making by sharing their opinions. A democratic leader encourages open conversation and helps their employees set goals, evaluate their own performance and motivates them to grow. Democratic leaders:

  • Encourage group members to share their ideas: The leader asks for and considers employee input.
  • Engage group members: The leader involves members and encourages them to involve others.
  • Foster confidence: The leader wants employees to feel confident in completing tasks without supervision.
  • Reward creativity: The leader encourages and rewards new ideas from the team.

Here, the word ‘Democratic’ does not identify with ‘political democracy. Instead, it broadly stands for the allocation of responsibility and the shared effort of group members toward decision-making. With a clear allocation of responsibility, the power that is centered at the top is distributed among members of the organization. However, it is important that the allocation of responsibility is clear, with no shades of grey. That is the first function of democratic leadership.

It is also important to note that although members of the group take a more participative role, the decision-making process is not a free-for-all. Some decisions are made at the top while some are made by nominated individuals who are competent in doing so. And while everyone is given the opportunity to participate and freely share their ideas in this setting, the leader is still there to offer guidance and control.

The second function of this style of leadership is “empowering group members”. Sharing and allocating responsibilities is the way to empower subordinates – which is a significant attribute of democratic leadership.

Delegating duties that were once totally shouldered by the leader at the top, and empowering members with new skills and abilities to contribute to decision-making, leads to higher productivity, increased contribution from group members, and increased group morale. Although Gastil maintains that the leader should empower the subordinates ‘genuinely’.

What Benefits are Afforded by Entrepreneurship to the Small Business Operator?

1. A flexible schedule
So many people begrudge the office routine that it’s called the “9-to-5 grind.” As an entrepreneur, you have the opportunity to break out of that cycle and create your own schedule. Start your day early if you’re a morning person, work later in the day if you prefer evenings, and take an afternoon jog whenever the fancy strikes.

This scheduling power isn’t just freeing, it also may be healthier as well. One study conducted by the National Center for Biotechnology Information found that a results-based work atmosphere (where the focus is on results rather than working a certain number of hours) leads to greater mental and physical wellness.

2. Autonomy
Digital news outlet Quartz reported on the multiple studies that have demonstrated the link between autonomy and job satisfaction. It turns out that employees who have more control over their work tend to be more engaged and less emotionally exhausted. Just another perk of being your own boss!

3. Creating a career that aligns with your values
Aligning your personal values with career values is an intensely gratifying experience. Someone who believes in respecting the environment, for instance, would probably find a career in renewable energy incredibly fulfilling.

You don’t have to find that perfect job; create it! Entrepreneurship allows you to fashion a life and career that directly align with your core values, like helping others, saving the environment, or putting family first.

4. Constant growth and development
Starting a company forces you to constantly improve your skillset, from marketing to closing deals to creating Excel reports. There is always more to learn and apply to your business, which can prevent complacency and encourage constant professional growth.

5. Meeting like-minded people
Businessman Jim Rohn said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” By becoming an entrepreneur, you will join a group of ambitious and helpful people who believe in bettering themselves and the world. It isn’t hard to imagine that these connections will push you to become a better person along the way.

Plus, there are plenty of opportunities to connect with mentors, brainstorm with fellow professionals, and reach out for help during tough times. No one succeeds alone, but with a supportive network of like-minded people, entrepreneurs don’t need to.

Tip: If you would like to connect with fellow entrepreneurs while developing your skills, find your nearest Community Futures regional office and sign up for a business workshop now!

6. Unexpected and thrilling experiences
If you are considering becoming an entrepreneur, you probably appreciate the value of the unexpected. Not knowing exactly how the day is going to play out when you wake up is exciting, especially when compared to the predictable and monotonous schedule of a traditional office job. Another related benefit: responding to unexpected situations teaches you to live in the moment and be more present.

7. Choosing who to work with
Entrepreneurs can choose which clients to work with, employees to hire, and partnerships to pursue. If having control over business relationships appeals to you, the entrepreneur life may be the perfect fit.

8. Greater self-confidence
Nothing boosts your confidence more than battling self-doubt and coming out on top. Many entrepreneurs become more confident in their self-sufficiency as time goes on and they see what they are truly capable of.

9. Leadership experience
Self-discipline, communication skills, passion, optimism, patience, and an unrelenting work ethic. Building a company from the ground up hones these leadership traits, which means that entrepreneurship can transform you into an inspiring leader both professionally and personally.

10. The best “offices”
Digital nomads are becoming increasingly common. These types of entrepreneurs often combine fun travel with an online business, and work from cafes, hotels, and co-working spaces in the coolest cities around the globe, which can make for some neat “offices.” Even if you aren’t trekking the world, the ability to work from a local park, a beautiful café, or even a home office (while wearing pajamas), is incredibly tempting.

How does Business Contribute to the Economic Development of a Country?

Economic development is attracting and growing businesses, creating and retaining jobs, and making our communities a better place to live.

Attracting and growing businesses strengthens our economy by providing locally-produced goods and services. Strong businesses pay taxes that go for vital services such as schools, roads, fire, and police. Businesses also provide good jobs that put money in people’s pockets and allow for a higher quality of life.

1. Investing in products and services people need.

What motivates a person to start a new business? According to traditional models, entrepreneurs create new businesses in response to unmet needs and demands in the market. That is, there is an opportunity to provide a product or service that is not currently in existence, or otherwise available. Economists refer to these business starters as “opportunity” entrepreneurs in order to distinguish these individuals from those who start businesses for lack of better work opportunities.

So-called “opportunity” entrepreneurs, who launch new enterprises in response to market needs, are key players when it comes to fostering economic growth in a region. They enable access to goods and services that populations require in order to be productive. This is not to ignore “necessity” entrepreneurs that launch enterprises because they have no other options. Both can and do contribute to economic growth.

2. Providing employment opportunities.

New businesses need to hire employees. They create jobs and these economic opportunities uplift and support communities through increasing the quality of life and overall standard of living.

3. Commerce and regional economic integration.

Technology has made it possible for small, entrepreneur-led businesses to expand into regional and global markets. When new businesses export goods and services to nearby regions, these enterprises contribute directly to a region’s productivity and earnings. This increase in revenue strengthens an economy and promotes the overall welfare of a population. Economies that trade with one another are almost always better off.

Politics aside, engaging in regional and international trade promotes investment in regional transportation and infrastructure, which also strengthens economies. This has never been more true than it is today, as we live in an increasingly interconnected global economy. Even for a large and advanced economy like the United States, foreign markets have a significant role. Foreign trade, according to some estimates, is responsible for over 90 percent of our economic growth.

What exactly is innovation and how does it promote economic development? Under what conditions, do entrepreneurs innovate? A widely-accepted definition measures innovation using a set of criteria including how many new products are invented, the percentage of high-tech jobs, and the size of the talent pool available to tech industry employers.

More recently and increasingly, our definition of innovation has expanded to include the development of new service offerings, business models, pricing plans, and routes to market. While the role that startups and young tech companies play in job creation is well documented, their contribution to overall productivity is less intuitive and not discussed as often.

4. New technologies promote efficiency.

The ability to turn ideas into new products and services that people need is the fount of prosperity for any developed country. Economic growth, generally speaking, is driven by new technologies and their creative applications. Periods of rapid innovation historically have been accompanied by periods of strong economic growth.

The impetus of innovation is the greatest natural resource of all: the human mind. Creating innovative products and solutions requires an educated population and an environment where collaborative work can take place. In addition to being good for business, education increases workforce creativity and quality of life.

5. Addressing environmental challenges.

Innovation is (and will continue to be) crucial when it comes to addressing the enormous environmental challenges we face today: combating climate change, lowering global greenhouse gas emissions, and preserving biodiversity in the environment. Without power for extended periods of time, commerce comes to a halt. Without water, we cannot live. Reliable access to these innovations (such as irrigation technology, electricity, and urban infrastructure) increases productivity and enhances economic development.

6. Innovation impacts socio-economic objectives.

Innovative business practices create efficiency and conserve resources. Innovation in agriculture is especially relevant for addressing socioeconomic challenges (in addition to encouraging economic growth). In the U.S., for instance, we waste billions of dollars annually due to inefficiencies and uncompetitive practices in our healthcare system.

Hopefully, new ideas and innovations in the future will address these problems, resulting in further reforms. When this occurs, Americans’ overall health and quality of life will benefit, and so will our economy if our wasteful healthcare costs also decrease.

7. Innovation happens where there is competition.

In essence, there is a positive feedback loop among innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic development.

New and growing businesses represent the principal sources of job creation and innovative activity in an economy, two factors that generally result in the rising standards of living for all.

However, it’s important to understand that entrepreneurship and innovation are dependent on access and participation. For entrepreneurs to bring new ideas to life, they need access to education and a level-playing field on which to compete. In this vein, the role of government leaders and public policy is to create conditions that allow more entrepreneurs to start businesses by implementing policies that nurture that environment so those businesses can grow.

Economic growth suffers when entrepreneurial activity is unevenly spread socio-economically, demographically, and geographically. Under the right conditions, entrepreneurs have incredible power: they help regional areas prosper economically, and they also serve society as they help engineer innovative solutions to problems and challenges.

What are the Advantages of Entrepreneurship in our Society?

More than a billion people around the world live in extreme poverty, and the impact of COVID-19 on global poverty is devastating in many areas. It drove an additional 97 million people into extreme poverty in 2020, according to World Bank estimates.

In order to really change things that will actually work in the long-term, we need a systematized approach of building businesses that are larger than the individuals. Economic systems cannot be jump-started without shared goals and shared work in the community.

Here are 7 benefits that entrepreneurship brings to any society:

1. Entrepreneurship is more than just starting up a new business.

Even without a formal business structure, there are so many benefits of entrepreneurship for the individual, like critical thinking, creativity, decision-making, and leadership. Entrepreneurial skills can be used in jobs, other roles in society, and even parenting. The personal growth and skillset benefits grow as entrepreneurs distinguish themselves as leaders, team workers, and provide service for others through transitions and job creation.

2. Entrepreneurship requires a new level of thinking.

If the entrepreneur’s only experience is coming from a trade, for example, then they may be starting with a limited understanding of business management and finance and have to gain higher knowledge and education in those areas. These gains in independence

3. Increasing entrepreneurial activities supports job creation.

Entrepreneurship delivers empowerment. Real change comes from empowerment, increases in dignity, and marketplace growth. Recognizing need and seizing the opportunity. People become more resilient as they push through tough challenges. It also helps to restore confidence and grow dignity, empowering everyone in the business and their community.

Entrepreneurship alone can’t solve all the poverty problems but it can help to reduce unemployment because job creation is a natural outcome as the business grows. A thriving business supports the owners financially, the staff and workers (and their circles of spending). In addition, it supports vendors, contractors, and other businesses that provide necessary products and services such as shipping, transportation, supplies, food and the like. Building these companies provides essential new jobs, and equips others as they build skills.

4. Entrepreneurship creates new sources of wealth

Creating and growing a business turns resources into value by sharing time, talents and treasures with others. A business becomes sustainable by exchanging markets, skills, and benefits in groups. Job creation can be difficult without access to new markets.

People and relationships along with innovation are the real solutions to creating sources of wealth. Business owners use their profit to facilitate greater effects in both tangible and intangible creation of financial, knowledge, skills and spiritual wealth.

5. Entrepreneurship works best in community.

Entrepreneurs can increase the odds of success by working with others. No one can do business alone. Starting and running a business requires creating internal jobs to fill roles in manufacturing or delivering services. It also requires other businesses, partnerships and vendor relationships that grow the local market. Each community, country, and region is different but entrepreneurship always involves more of the community assets and resources.

6. Entrepreneurship done intentionally creates more than income.

Raising income and upleveling skills of staff takes dedication and intention for betterment in order to create exponential benefits of a highly productive and profitable medium-sized business. This goal, though, can yield a lot more than revenue. Growing a business stimulates new markets, increases competition, and boosts innovation. It can have a positive impact on community lifestyles while providing new choices and changing consumer demand.

7. Entrepreneurship delivers the hope of seeing opportunity

As a business grows, the owners, staff, vendors, and customers create their own value, point the direction, and are guided by the organization’s goals and visions. With the value exchange along the path of commerce and more jobs created, all sides increase and the collective individuals in the community grow independence, knowledge, and a sense of responsibility. This is where hope thrives and more opportunity grows.

Why Democratic Leadership is Important for Business?

Democratic leadership refers to a leadership style in which all levels of employees participate fully in your organization’s decision-making process. As a leader, you still have final say over any organizational change, but your employees are given the opportunity to freely share ideas and engage in discussion.

This style of leadership—sometimes referred to as participative management—is a popular technique for executives who want to foster a supportive workplace culture. Keep reading to find out how a democratic leadership style can make a difference in your organization.

There are many reasons why democratic leadership is good for organizations. Perhaps most important is that this leadership style makes your employees feel valued. No matter what team they’re on or what their job title is, democratic leadership ensures that employees have a say in the direction of the company.

The benefits of democratic leadership include:

  • Increased morale throughout the organization
  • Higher productivity
  • Better collaboration
  • Fewer silos between departments
  • A sense of equality among employees

This type of leadership style may also foster creativity among your employees and help them develop strong decision-making skills. The experience of being involved in company decision-making can be incredibly beneficial for entry-level employees as they advance into leadership positions.

Many executives find that democratic leadership goes a long way in cultivating trust and respect from employees as well. By inviting employees of all levels to share their ideas and engage in open discussions, you may find more opportunities to connect with individuals you don’t normally interact with. Building these relationships is a key trait of successful managers, according to Gallup, and can be crucial for keeping morale high during times of change or disruption.

Employing a democratic leadership model may require you to make some changes to your company’s typical decision-making process. Here are our top tips for executives who want to lean into a participative management style.

Encourage Open Communication

For a democratic leadership model to work, you need to create avenues in which employees can easily share their thoughts with upper management. For example, you could set up a survey form that employees can use to share feedback before business decisions are reached. Another option may be openly discussing upcoming business decisions at company-wide meetings.

Thank Employees for Their Contributions

According to Gallup, only about 36% of U.S. employees feel engaged in their work. By turning your team members into active decision-makers, you can help them feel like they are making a difference. Be sure to thank employees for taking the time to provide feedback and emphasize that their opinions are valued and recognized by the executive team.

Be Open to New Ideas

Democratic leaders base their decisions on their employees’ feedback and input. Oftentimes, the perspectives of your employees may differ significantly from your own. It’s important to be open to new ways of thinking and be willing to adjust your business plans based on your team’s feedback. You may be surprised how often a brainstorming session can lead to more impactful solutions for your business.

Offer Guidance as Needed

Some of your employees may not have much experience making decisions on behalf of a group—and that’s okay. While democratic leadership encourages participation from all levels of employees, that doesn’t mean that the burden of decision-making is equally shared by everyone. As an executive, you still have a responsibility to provide guidance as needed. This is especially important if tension begins to rise among team members with differing opinions. In this situation, it would be up to you to help find a solution that works for everyone.

Learn From Fellow Executives

You can refine your leadership skills by learning from others in similar roles. To gain insights from other executives, consider attending a leadership webinar or joining a professional organization. Once you have connections in place, you can reach out to your network for advice whenever you are faced with a challenging business decision.

With a Forbes Councils membership, you will gain access to a like-minded community of CEOs and entrepreneurs. Participating in our community discussions allows you to exchange ideas with leaders in your industry.

Finally

To sum up, supporting and promoting entrepreneurship can have a positive impact on the country’s economy and even existing businesses, and social entrepreneurship increases the likelihood of finding innovation solutions to social challenges faced by communities around the world.
