Top 10 Transcription Jobs For Beginners

1. Accutran Global 

Accutran Global is “always” interested in hearing from new transcribers. However, Accutran is seeking experienced voice writers/stenographers located in the U.S. and Canada.

Keep in mind, they have peak times when there is a ton of work and non-peak times of the year when there may be no work at all.

Pay rate is by the word ($0.005 to start). Payments are made on the 15th of each month.

You will need to pass a transcription test to be considered. Accutran Global is not ideal for parents or caregivers who are responsible for others; you are expected to finish claimed work ASAP. In other words, you cannot have any distractions that delay your turnaround times. 

2. Appenscribe 

Appenscribe offers global transcription jobs online. So if you are fluent in multiple languages, you will have more work available to you.

To get started, you will need to register an account and pass two small transcription tests. Contractors report different pay rates, but you can expect a rate of about $0.005 per word. Payments are made twice a month.

Work is not always available through Appenscribe, but when work is available, you can claim it any time day or night! There are non-transcription projects available at times too, if you want to expand your work-from-home earnings. 

3. Bam!

Bam! mostly offers entertainment transcription services, but they also do legal, corporate, finance, research and general transcription projects, too. If you can pass a skills test, they will consider you as a contractor.

Their application is not found on their site. You will have to contact them via their contact form or email them at bam@bamtranscription.com to express your interest as a potential typist.

4. CastingWords

CastingWords has two ways for transcriptionists to find work: The CastingWords Workshop and Mechanical Turk. Through their Workshop, they offer has transcription jobs online in 66 countries.

Through Mechanical Turk (MT) you’ll never know what you will find–sometimes there are a ton of HITS (MT lingo for jobs) and other times, there is hardly anything. The pay rates vary from job to job, but all you need is $1.00 in your account to request payout.

5. Crowdsurf

Like CastingWords, Crowdsurf posts their transcription jobs online through Mechanical Turk. They offer short transcription and captioning tasks. To get started you need an MT account.

You will accept and work on Crowdsurf jobs through the MT platform and receive payments this way, too. If you’ve never heard of MT, it’s an Amazon company. There are hundreds of thousands transcription and non-transcription jobs posted here at any given time.

6. Daily Transcription

Daily Transcription provides corporate, legal, and entertainment transcription with same day turnaround times (hence the name!). There are no guaranteed hours or amount of work available, but they are always looking for transcriptionists at all experience levels as long as they are reliable.

Work is available on an as-needed basis. To get started, you just need to submit a short form and then head over to their testing page.

7. Scribie

Scribie is where many aspiring typists go when they first look for transcription jobs online. There is a waiting list of thousands (yes, thousands!). They hire worldwide and pay via PayPal. The pay rate is $10.00/audio hour.

If you complete three hours of audio in a month, you get a bonus $10.00. There are pros and cons to Scribie. The cons are the low pay.

Even as far as transcription jobs online for beginners goes, they pay pretty low. But on a positive note, there are no cash out limits and no commitments (work as much or as little as you want, when you want!).

8. Tigerfish

Tigerfish offers flexible transcription jobs online. They have a ton of different project types available (focus groups, interviews, law enforcement, documentaries). You will have to complete three five-minute tests in order to be considered for paid projects.

These five-minute tests should take you about 20 minutes each to complete (if you are going way over the 20-minute mark per test, transcribing may not be worthwhile for you).

9. Transcriptions ‘N’ Translations

Miami-based Transcriptions ‘N’ Translations does transcription projects for big names like Discovery Channel and Animal Planet. If you can pass a skills test, you can contract with them.

To get started, you need to submit your resume along with a short form located on their website.

10. TranscribeMe!

TranscribeMe! posts transcription jobs online for English and Spanish typists. The first step is filling out a form. After that, you will be directed to take a test.

If you pass, someone from their Operations Department will contact you within 48 hours to discuss the next steps (don’t worry, if you fail, you can retake the exam in 24 hours). Transcribers get paid per audio hour. Payments are made every week.

What Transcription Company Pays The Best?

1. TranscribeMe

TranscribeMe is a popular option for newbies interested in having a go at transcribing as a way to earn extra cash. They don’t require previous experience but a background in law or medicine can get you a higher pay rate.

According to the company, monthly average earnings clock in at $250 while their top transcriptionists earn as much as $2,200. 

TranscribeMe divides the projects that they receive into short 1 to 2 minute clips, making them less tedious to transcribe. To apply, just register, take the exam, and wait for their reply within 12 business days.

2. GMR Transcription

The company has a reasonable turnaround time of 6 hours for 10-minute media so even slow typers can make it work. They don’t have a monthly quota as well so you’re free to work as much or as little as you want.

Their Glassdoor reviews are good with an average rating of 4.0. The most common complaint is that their audio files tend to have poor quality.

How Much do Beginner Transcriptionists Make?

Transcription is a well-paying career with many opportunities. A transcriptionist’s salary is generally around $15, while an advanced transcriptionist earns around $25 to $30 per hour. With this rate, you can easily earn $1,500 every month if you work 2.5 hours per day for 24 days.

According to PayScale, the median transcriptionists’ salary is $15.22 per hour. How do You Pass a Transcription Test?

Practice Typing Regularly

While each company sets its own standards for acceptable typing speed, you should set a goal to type at least 60 words per minute (wpm) without errors. It’s possible to type as slowly as 35 wpm and pass transcription tests, but any slower than that can be challenging. Learn to place your fingers on the keyboard without looking at them in your transcription practice sessions.

It’s helpful to practice audio transcription from videos that you enjoy, even if you don’t own transcription equipment yet. If you really want a career in this field, you will need to make typing a regular habit. Keep in mind that in most cases accuracy is more important than speed, although both are important skills.

Listen Carefully

Being able to hear words from audio recordings properly is a major requirement for passing a transcription test online. Typing too many wrong words during testing can adversely affect your score.

Make sure when you practice and test that you are completely focused on the audio without distractions. That usually means turn off the TV or any other background noise that may disrupt your performance.

There may be times when words are completely unintelligible, in which you will either insert this term in brackets such as [unintelligible] or whatever the study guide for a specific test calls for. Transcription tests are timed so you will have to use your best judgment and move on.

Prepare a Resume

Some companies want to get your resume to make sure that you meet their qualifications before you can test with them.

Learn Transcription Formatting

In order to score high on a transcription test online, you will need to have a clear understanding of transcription formatting. Transcription services and schools usually require specific formatting, which you will need to review in the particular institution’s study guide. 

Typically, you will insert a line break between speakers. Identifiers such as “speaker” or “audience” are usually typed in bold. Transcription tests often ask participants to save a file, using the appropriate file name and extension (such as – Test.mp4). Page layouts, margins, font types, and sizes are also part of formatting.

Invest in Transcription Tools

If you work independently, you will need to invest in your own audio recording equipment and accessories, such as a headset and transcription software. A headset will help you be more comfortable and concentrate better when taking a transcription test online.

How Fast do I Need to Type to be a Transcriber

While most transcriptionists can type at least 50 words per minute (wpm), there is not an official typing speed requirement for this profession. Transcriptionists who work with time-sensitive projects usually type 65 to 75 wpm. Some transcriptionists who complete overflow and non-crucial work type an average of 40 to 45 wpm, according to The General Transcription Business Guide.

How Can I Learn Transcription at Home?

If you’re looking for transcription training, you should know that you don’t actually need formal training to become a general transcriber. That said, knowing what you’re doing could certainly get you higher-paying jobs.

• CareerStep – This is the go-to training for people aspiring to become medical transcribers (they have courses on things like medical billing and coding as well). Many of my readers who have gone through this training have great things to say about it. CareerStep offers payment plans and discounts for military spouses.

How do You do Legal Transcription?

Before you have any conversation transcribed for legal purposes, make sure you understand the requirements of legal transcription.

1. You Can’t Correct Grammar with Legal Transcription

It can be tempting to correct improper grammar when transcribing legal conversations. But the purpose of verbatim transcription is to transcribe exactly what each person said — not how they should have said it.

So if someone uses slang or incorrect grammar, such as “wanna,” “gonna,” “ain’t,” or “cuz,” it must be included in the legal transcription.

2. Nonverbal Communication and Background Noise Should Be Noted

Another legal transcription rule is that transcriptions must include all sounds in the recording. This means that beyond words, transcriptionists also need to take note of sounds.

For example, when transcribing what’s going on in the courtroom, legal transcriptionists need to include the sounds of someone clearing their throat, coughing, or talking in the background.

If the person who is talking laughs, cries, shakes their head, or nods their head, this should be noted in the transcribed document, as well, whenever possible. These nonverbal cues may be just as meaningful as words, which is why they need to be present in the final product.

3. Don’t Forget to Include Filler Words

Some types of transcription – such as intelligent transcription – encourage the exclusion of filler words, such as “um” or “uh.” But with legal transcription, these sounds are required to be transcribed.

Like nonverbal communication and background noise, filler words can say a lot more than you think. Some lawyers might use them to help determine how nervous, prepared, or hesitant a person was when speaking in the courtroom or during interrogations.

This can obviously have an impact on any legal case, which is why leaving out even the smallest sounds and pauses is strictly not an option.

4. False Starts and Stutters Must be Documented, Too

Legal transcription rules state that stutters and false starts need to be transcribed. Examples include “I…I…” or “I didn’t, I mean, I did…”

These parts of speech might not mean much to some people, but to legal professionals, they can be telling. That’s why it’s important to leave it up to the experts who will be reading the document to decide if the false starts and stutters are meaningful or not.
