The camshaft is an essential component: a simple rod or shaft with shaped lobes next to it is called a “camshaft.” When the shaft rotates, the shape of the cam allows it to act on the valve or to move to a level corresponding to the intensity of its shape: the speed of rotation controls the speed of operation.
The camshafts are used in different pumps, engines, and compressors. In the latest IC engines, it usually, but not necessarily, is located directly above the cylinder and is used to control the valves. Its calibration controls the amount of air-fuel mixture that enters the combustion chamber and the efficiency with which the exhaust gases of the previous combustion can escape from the combustion chamber and sets the path for the next charge. This not only makes them very important for engine performance but also because the movement of the piston must precisely and completely adjust the opening and closing of the valve; they also have a significant impact on performance.
To ensure this synchronization, the cam connects with the crankshaft via a timing belt or chain. In addition, the shape of the cam is precisely designed to control the valve opening and closing. This is more commonly known as variable valve timing.
Camshaft Working
Camshafts can be defined as a mechanical element with a curved profile that, when moved (oscillating or rotated), provides the movement of another element called an amplifier.
A cam is a rotating mechanical part that uses to transfer energy to another element via direct contact. The camshaft can rotate back and forth (referring to the part of the device that moves back and forth in a straight line), rotate, or shake.
Cam mechanisms are widely used in the operation of internal combustion engines, main machines, gear processing machines, and other machines.
The camshaft uses lobes called cams that force the valves to open when they rotate. The throttle valve returns to the closed position.
Camshaft Material
The installed camshaft is mainly made of modular cast iron (armature hardening is the surface hardening of steel and other alloy parts. Place the desired part on the copper coil and then heat it from the transfer temperature by applying an alternating current to the coil to avoid damage. Other options are steel, stainless steel, brass, and copper.
Camshaft Function
The camshaft is the most important part of the internal combustion engine. Its main task is to control the timing valve allows the intake valve to open at the right time for the air-fuel mixture to reach the engine. A camshaft is usually installed in a vehicle’s engine to allow exhaust gases to escape or leave the combustion zone for a sufficient amount of time.
Camshaft Types
Generally, there are two types of camshafts.
- Flat tappet Cam – Height indicates overhang at maximum increase. The lobe and bonnet are close together using a flat camshaft, and the bonnet rotates on the camshaft. The elevator must rotate towards the impeller to avoid unnecessary and destructive wear.
- Roller Cam: The end of the roller is round, which means the roller holds the valve at a higher height for a more extended period of time, which affects the need for air/fuel charge. The shape of the blade can also open the valve faster.
Difference between a solid camshaft and a hydraulic camshaft
The solid cam is an excellent choice for racing engines. They generally feature a faster camshaft than a hydraulic cam, but not as fast as a roller cam. Compared to hydraulic cams, they also require screw springs, but they are not as rigid as rollers.
Advantages of Camshafts
Depending on the cylinder setting and valve operation, there may be a different number of camshafts in the engine. Since each cylinder requires at least one camshaft, internal engines only require one camshaft, while V-shaped settings require at least two camshafts. Some cars use double overhead camshafts (DOHC), so there are up to four in two-cylinder groups.
Despite the additional weight and cost, the use of additional shafts in each row offers many advantages over the overhead camshaft (SOHC) design. Completing
