Third-party integration

Facebook users have the option to share their searches with their Facebook friends using Facebook Connect.

On June 10, 2013, Apple announced that it would be dropping Google as its web search engine in favour of Bing. This feature is only integrated with iOS 7 and higher and for users with an iPhone 4S or higher as the feature is only integrated with Siri, Apple’s personal assistant.

Integration with Windows 8

Windows 8.1 includes Bing “Smart Search” integration, which processes all queries submitted through the Windows Start Screen. The Bing integration captures a variety of features, one of the most prominent and advertised being Hero Search.

This feature allows users to browse for popular and well-known places, objects or people. Searching France, for example, will show popular search items, such as population, calling code and date founded. The current weather and location are also directly accessible using Bing Weather and Bing maps.

The “Hero” result will go further to provide attractions using Bing Images and popular websites relating to France, such as France Wikipedia and France’s official website. Searching an artist will display similar results with the option to play music using the Windows 8-integrated Groove Music application.

Translator

Bing Translator is a user facing translation portal provided by Microsoft to translate texts or entire web pages into different languages. All translation pairs are powered by the Microsoft Translator, a statistical machine translation platform and web service, developed by Microsoft Research, as its backend translation software.

Two transliteration pairs (between Chinese (Simplified) and Chinese (Traditional)) are provided by Microsoft’s Windows International team. As of June 2020, Bing Translator offers translations in 60 different language systems.

Bing Translator can translate phrases entered by the user or acquire a link to a web page and translate its entirely. When translating an entire web page, or when the user selects “Translate this page” in Bing search results, the Bilingual Viewer is shown, which allows users to browse the original web page text and translation in parallel, supported by synchronized highlights, scrolling, and navigation.

Four Bilingual Viewer layouts are available: side by side, top and bottom, original with hover translation and translation with hover original.

Bing Predict

Bing Predicts launched on April 21, 2014. The first reality shows to be featured on Bing Predicts were The Voice, American Idol, and Dancing with the Stars.

The prediction accuracy for Bing Predicts is 80% for American Idol, and 85% for The Voice. Bing Predicts also predicts the outcomes of major political elections in the United States.

Bing Predicts had 97% accuracy for the 2014 United States Senate elections, 96% accuracy for the 2014 United States House of Representatives elections, and an 89% accuracy for the 2014 United States gubernatorial elections.

Bing Predicts also made predictions for the results of the 2016 United States presidential primaries. It has also done predictions in sports, including a perfect 15 for 15 in the 2014 World Cup, leading to positive press such as a Business Insider story on its successes and a PC World article on how Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella did well in his March Madness bracket entry.

In 2016, Bing Predicts failed to accurately predict the winner of the 2016 US presidential election, showing Hillary Clinton chance of winning by 81%.

How Does Microsoft Bing Make Money

Similar to other search engines, their main income is from Bing advert. People can publish advertisement on Bing by paying specific amount of money. It’s the main source of income of Bing.

Who Uses Bing and Should I Advertise There?

Google is by far the most popular search engine and is where you will find the largest volume of searches in the UK. Many people think that nobody really uses anything else, but people do actually use Bing and you could be missing out on search traffic.

If you are looking for international search volume then Bing actually garners a larger percentage of searches in other countries such as the US.

Do People Still Use Bing?

People are still using Bing as a search engine in the UK, with around 12.26% of searches coming from Bing. It is also worth noting this number increases to 30% in the US. A study by the Regional Sales Director at Microsoft shows that the demographic for Bing audiences is quite focused.

The study suggests that Bing has a largely older audience that is generally wealthier, which might have something to do with Bing being the default browser for Microsoft. Some interesting figures from the study include:

  • Searches on Bing lead to a higher spend by almost 25% more
  • 1/3 of all Bing Ads are shown to audiences with an income of over $100,000
  • There were more than 55 million retail related searches on Bing that weren’t on Google
  • People searching on Bing are most likely to be at least 35, with most between 55-64
How Do You Make the Most of Bing?

You should consider using paid adverts on Bing if your target audience meets the above criteria. You can reach a large audience and also reach a particular target audience that might be more likely to actually purchase your products.

Using Google AdWords allows you to target a huge audience but it might prove expensive if they are not the right target audience. There are just as many features with Bing Ads as AdWords and you can even set demographic targeting so that you can focus your efforts even more.

Although there isn’t a massive search volume with Bing, you will find that you might actually have a much more targeted audience that is more likely to convert. Bing can definitely be worth experimenting with if you have the right audience and you will be reaching people you wouldn’t have found on Google.

How to Make Money From Bing With Bing Rewards

Bing Rewards launched in 2010 as a way to incentivize the use of the Bing search engine. Sure, it seems a bit like Bing is bribing people to use their search engine, but loyalty programs are pretty common in other industries.

With Bing Rewards, members earn credits for searching using Bing, checking out new features, and performing other tasks. As long as you’re signed in to your Bing Rewards account, you can earn credits while searching on any device.

Bing has steadily increased their U.S. search engine market share in recent years, climbing from 16.3% at the end of 2012 to 18.2% in December 2013. By September 2014, searches on Bing accounted for 19.4% of all U.S. searches.

Bing Rewards: Features and Benefits

The Bing Rewards program allows you to earn credits for searching on Bing, using new Bing features, or trying certain other Microsoft products and services.

Bing Rewards are tracked through a credit counter on your browser (Internet Explorer 7 or later, or the latest version of Firefox, Chrome or Safari), which appears in the top right corner of any Bing.com page you’re visiting.

Alternatively, you can download and install the Bing Bar, which has a Bing Rewards button and credit counter. Mobile users can also access Bing Rewards through their default mobile web browser.

Bing Rewards members can earn points for using Bing – consider it a frequent flyer program for searchers. It’s a tiered program, so more credits are available to upper level members.

Bing Rewards Loyalty Levels: Member, Silver & Gold Benefits

Bing Rewards offers more perks to those who reach their higher status membership levels.

The first tier is ‘Member’ and is the entry-level for new members. Members get credits for using Bing for their searches and for daily offers.

Once a Member completes the Welcome to Rewards tour, redeems their first reward and has accumulated at least 200 credits, they move up to Silver level. With the promotion, Bing Rewards Silver members get a 50 credit bonus.

The highest Bing Rewards level is Gold, which members can attain once they’ve earned 750 lifetime credits and are performing 150 qualifying searches on Bing each month. Once a member reaches Gold level, they get up to 10% off their rewards redemptions.

Earning More Bing Rewards Credits

Bing Rewards offers members different ways to accumulate credits. Using Bing for searches on your PC gives you 1 credit for every 2 searches, up to a maximum of 15 credits per day.

As you complete the available Bing Rewards credit tasks, you’ll see them checked off in your dashboard and in the drop-down from your browser credit counter:

Other ways to earn:

  • Invite friends to use Bing Rewards and earn 100 credits for each friend who reaches Silver status (for a maximum of 500 credits).
  • Use Bing for mobile searches and earn 1 credit for every 2 searches, up to a maximum of 10 credits per day.
  • Complete the tasks in your Bing Rewards dashboard. This is where Bing posts special offers that are typically worth 1 credit each, in exchange for completing a task. For example, as I’m writing this, Bing is offering 1 credit if you use the MSN Food & Drink App, and another if you explore Bing’s most popular features on a special web resource they created (see above).

Bing also offers special rewards incentives and limited-time promotions. When these are available, you’ll see the announcement on the Bing Blog.

What Can You Get for Using Bing

Bing Rewards offers three different ways to redeem your credits: Shop, Donate or Win.

The filtering options for rewards are pretty much non-existent right now. You can choose Shop, Donate, or Win, but cannot filter by retailer, price or any other parameter. Currently, there are only 41 rewards listed in the Shop section, but if the program grows, filters would definitely be a necessary addition.

Not surprisingly, many of the Bing Rewards options offered are Microsoft products or those from their other brands, including Microsoft Store credits, discounts on Bing  and Microsoft apparel, subscriptions to Microsoft OneDrive or premium Microsoft Outlook, Skype credit, or Xbox memberships and gift cards.

However, other Bing Rewards currently available in exchange for credits include:

  • Points/miles for airline and hotel loyalty programs
  • Prints and photobooks from Shutterfly
  • Gift cards for Amazon, Applebee’s, Burger King, Domino’s Pizza, Groupon, IHOP, iTunes, Sephora, Starbucks and other businesses.

Each item available in the Bing Rewards Shop links to a product page with a description, image and price in points.

How do You Sign up For Bing Rewards

You used to be able to sign in with your Facebook account, but Microsoft and Facebook must have fallen out of love because that option has been phased out. Bing Rewards users can only use their Facebook account to login until February 15, 2015.

After that, you’ll need a Microsoft account. Navigate over to Bing Rewards to get started. Remember, it’s only open to U.S. residents and even then, Americans can’t earn or redeem credits while traveling abroad (unless they’re using a proxy server, shhh).

You’ll have to give your phone number so Bing Rewards can verify the account and VOIP numbers aren’t permitted.

Everything You Need to Know About Microsoft Edge

Microsoft has made a big effort with Edge to improve the browsing experience, and it’s paid off. Microsoft Edge has enough features and benefits that it’s actually a real alternative to more popular browsers like Chrome or Firefox.

This is especially true with the Edge’s most recent update , which overhauled how the browser runs and operates.

The newest version of Edge is what’s called a “Chromium” browser. This means that it can run hundreds of extensions that were originally meant for Google Chrome users. This includes screen readers, in-browser games, productivity tools, and more.

This is in addition to the extensions already in the Microsoft Store, which you can also use. If you can think of a feature you’d like the browser to have, there’s probably an extension for it.

If you sign up for a free Microsoft account, you can sync your bookmarks, history, passwords, and more. This means that if you use Edge on a different computer, you’ll have all of your browsing data available in moments.

Reviews have also said that this new version of Edge runs faster than previous versions , putting it about on par with Chrome and Firefox.

The page should automatically detect whether you’re using a Mac, PC, iPhone, or Android device. If you think the page has gotten it wrong, click the arrow next to the “Download” button to see all the available versions.

Is Bing Profitable For Microsoft?

After investing billions, Bing’s market share is still small, but Microsoft has stayed committed to search, used it to enhance its other products and has bigger plans ahead for its advertising business. But has it been profitable for Microsoft?

Success is measured on relative terms. Before passing judgment on how far Bing has come, keep in mind that it is one of Microsoft’s many products — albeit a very important one — and that it doesn’t operate with the same resources as Google.

“We have demonstrated that there can be a competitive player in the industry that is a viable alternative to the incumbent for consumers, publishers and advertisers,” Sirich asserted, concluding that, “This has spurred innovation and helped to keep pricing in check, which has benefited the entire industry.”

Advertisers continue to root for competition and innovation. “It’s my hope that Microsoft continues to lean into these differentiators,” said Hull, “which will continue to shift the perception of their advertising offering from being seen as just an extension of a channel strategy and into a completely separate solution that delivers compelling results for a variety of brands and verticals.”

Is Bing a Success?

Bing is mostly seen as Microsoft’s hopeless attempt at making a search engine and the distant runner up to Google. SEO experts use it as a nice bonus search engine to optimize for as a sound overall strategy, but virtually no one targets Bing as a main source of traffic.

Bing is like the slower kid in class that is constantly being outshined. But did you ever wonder why Microsoft still keeps it around, seeing as Google is not about to lose its crown anytime soon?

So, what revenue does Microsoft see from Bing, exactly? Surprisingly, a lot – about $5 billion in annual revenue in 2017. Microsoft saw roughly $1.8 billion in search ad revenue alone for that year.

To understand why Bing is actually successful, let’s take a look at some figures and stats:

This is the current global search market share: Google is at the top with a whopping 87.1%, followed with just a fraction of that by Bing with 5.82% and Yahoo! with 2.98%. It may not seem like much, but let’s take a closer look at the numbers and facts that we know:

Google handles 5.6 billion search queries a day, so that means Bing’s relative share, based on those stats, will be somewhere around 374 million search queries a day! Also, Bing has 1.37 billion unique global visitors per month.

Now, that is some serious potential for traffic and a wide reach! If you rank first positions on Bing with these numbers, you can get a nice chunk of visitors, depending on your niche.

Not to mention that if your main target audience is the US and UK, you should start caring about Bing SEO and SEM even more. If the Global stats don’t impress you enough, you should consider that according to Microsoft, Bing’s US market share is 33% in the US and 23% in the UK. That means that effectively, only targeting Google will give you access to just 2/3 of the potential traffic pie.

How Much is Bing Worth?

you can find the estimated website value for bing.com in US Dollars. We calculate it based on our estimation for daily, monthly, and annual revenue.

How Much Does Bing Make?

In a market dominated by Google, Bing is still the second most popular search engine worldwide. And it’s increasingly used in Microsoft products like Cortana.

Overall, Microsoft’s search business is growing. The company brought in a revenue of $7.74 billion from search advertising in the 2020 fiscal year.

What Can You Get With Bing Rewards?

Bing Rewards offers three different ways to redeem your credits: Shop, Donate or Win.

The filtering options for rewards are pretty much non-existent right now. You can choose Shop, Donate, or Win, but cannot filter by retailer, price or any other parameter. Currently, there are only 41 rewards listed in the Shop section, but if the program grows, filters would definitely be a necessary addition.

Bing Ads Revenue

This statistic shows Microsoft Corporation’s global search advertising revenue in the fiscal years 2016 to 2020. In FY2020, Microsoft generated around 7.74 billion U.S. dollars in revenue from search advertising.

How Many Microsoft Points is a Dollar?

As it is now, 80 Microsoft Points are equal to $1. So take your total number of Microsoft Points, divide it by 80, and that’s how much money — you’ll possibly have more — will be in your Microsoft account. More detailed information can be found at their FAQ.

Which is The Main Source of Income For Bing?

Like most of the other search engines that bother to make profits they do so from ads. Bing ad is a Microsoft ad program and the last time we checked they were making about 6 billion in revenue.

We think it is important to stress out that their ad program is limited to advertisers and users in the United states.

How Much Money Does Microsoft Make From Bing Ads Program?

According to Statista, Bing has 1.03 billion unique global visitors per month. In addition, 38 percent of Bing users had an annual income of $100,000 or more.

Not only is the search engine installed in billions of devices, but the platform is also appealing to a significant number of high-income earners.

Why Does Microsoft Still Invest in The Bing Search Engine?

Microsoft is dedicated to making projects work even at times of loses. Even Xbox had some losses but Microsoft helped it by purchasing Halo. So yes, it is losing money but it’s not the black hole of business. Microsoft is making Bing “the decision engine” more than Google, easier for homeowners’ mentality, with enough knowledge to complete any task.

Microsoft has invested money into data centers and they are working now. Next, the company partnered with Yahoo which will clear by the end of this year. Then Microsoft hired lots personnel to operate it and that’s done. They spent some money, to make more money. That’s just business sense. Right now Bing is growing at 14% to 24% on click volume and search ads and still growing.

So now, Bing is standing on its own, integrated with maximum visibility among other search engines. All that and Microsoft helped Xbox and then released its latest version of Windows too.

So Bing is still posting losses. So why not just sell it? But the best company to operate it is Microsoft itself. Nobody else would have the fortitude or the same interest that Microsoft put into it from the beginning.

Facebook, Apple, nor anyone else, wouldn’t be operating with the same interest as Microsoft. And, with all its losses, no other company would be interested in buying it. Even if they did, there is no way that Microsoft could get their full price, especially the amount they put into it.

It’s totally clear that Microsoft will not beat a dead horse. They will invest more to keep it operating in their own way. This is why Bing is still around.

Microsoft Edge Features

Microsoft announced a set of new consumer services including new consumer features in Microsoft Edge that help you stay organized and save time,  protect your online data and identity, and give you value back.

1. Organize your research with Collections

If you’re having to suddenly design your child’s academic curriculum, or maybe spending more time at home has you rediscovering your inner chef, Collections can be a big help.

Collections allows you to easily collect information from different websites, organize it, export it into various files or just come back to your research at a later time and pick up right where you left off. Today it can be difficult to do this – especially across a large number of different websites and multiple devices.

Just click on the Collections button and a pane on the right of your browser opens, where you can easily drag and drop webpages, text, or images into a group – without having to open another page or application. You can then send your collection to Word or Excel. You can also share your collection by copying and pasting into Outlook or another email service.

2. Work efficiently with vertical tabs

When you research online, you might find yourself with dozens of tabs open at any given time. When that happens, there’s less space for you to see which tab is which. You may even lose track or accidentally close a tab as a result. Utterly frustrating as that is usually exactly the one page you needed.

Well, Microsoft announced vertical tabs, a feature that helps you easily find and manage many open tabs at once. Microsoft Edge is the only browser that allows you to manage your tabs on the side with a single click. Vertical tabs is expected in the Insider channels in the next few months.

3. Save Time With Smart Copy

How often do you cut and paste content from the web into documents only to see the beautiful web content reformatted into an ugly mess of text that you then need to clean up?

Smart copy makes it easier to select, copy and paste the exact content you want from the web and preserve the rich web format. You can use your cursor to select any area or type of content.

When you paste it will retain the formatting, including any images or links. It’s something that sounds so simple, but believe me, it’s a life-changer. Smart copy is expected in the Insider channels next month.

4. Tracking Prevention

The tracking prevention feature in Microsoft Edge is designed to protect you from being tracked by websites that you aren’t accessing directly, giving you more control over what you see and what you don’t.

Whether on mobile or desktop, you can select one of three settings that’s right for you – Basic, Balanced or Strict. Depending on which setting you choose, Microsoft Edge will adjust the types of third-party trackers blocked.

When browsing, some might like to use Balanced mode which is the default setting.  But they will set my kids’ browsers to Strict mode. Tracking prevention makes understanding who’s tracking you online easier to see and easy to manage, and it’s available now.

5. Password Monitor

Each year, millions of online personal credentials are exposed in data breaches and end up for sale on the dark web.

Now there is Password Monitor in Microsoft Edge to help keep your online accounts safe from hackers. When enabled, Password Monitor is a feature that notifies you if the credentials you’ve saved to autofill have been detected on the dark web.

If Microsoft Edge uncovers a match with any of your saved username + passwords, you will receive a notification from within the browser prompting you to take action.

Through a dashboard in Settings, you can view a list of all leaked credentials and get routed to their respective websites to change your password. Once the password has been changed, save the new credential to autofill and continue browsing with peace of mind knowing that Microsoft Edge and Password Monitor have your back.

Again, such a simple, easy solution that makes me feel SO much better about browsing the web. One less thing to worry about. Password Monitor is expected in the Insider channels in the next few months.

6. Enhancements to InPrivate mode

Sometimes you want extra online privacy. If I’m sharing a device with other members of my family, for example, I may not want them to see the gift I’m researching for their birthday because I want to keep it a surprise! It’s for times like those that I like to use InPrivate because it automatically deletes my history, cookies and site data when I finish a web browsing session.

In addition, Microsoft Edge is the only desktop browser that offers built-in InPrivate search with Bing. So, when I’m browsing in InPrivate mode, my searches aren’t tied to me or my account.  InPrivate browsing is available now. The addition of InPrivate search in Bing is available in the Insider channels now and is coming to the Stable channel soon.

7. Immersive Reader

Immersive Reader, built into Microsoft Edge, makes reading online easier and more accessible for everyone. Reading is one of the most common activities on the web but it can be difficult to do if you have dyslexia or other reading disabilities.

Clicking on the Immersive Reader icon removes distractions on the screen and creates a simplified environment that helps you focus. You can also access a variety of tools that help personalize the experience that works best for you, like the ability to hear the article read aloud or to adjust the text. Immersive Reader is available now with more features like line focus coming soon.

8. Microsoft Edge delivers the best immersive viewing experience in 4K and Dolby Audio

These days, many of us are watching a lot more Netflix than before. Our goal is to provide the best high definition entertainment experience when viewing content on the web.  Microsoft Edge is the only browser on Windows 10 that lets you watch 4K on Netflix.

It’s also the only browser that supports Dolby Audio and Dolby Vision on Windows 10. Through our partnership with Netflix, you and your friends can stream your favorite movies and shows like “Spenser Confidential,” “Locke and Key” and “Night on Earth” in 4K from anywhere on your Windows 10 PC. There are hundreds of 4K Netflix titles to choose from. This feature is available now.

9. Give With Bing

Introducing Give with Bing and the Give Mode feature in Bing, a new way to help you to support the causes you care about. It’s a simple thing but it has the potential for real impact.

With more than 1 million nonprofits to choose from, you can support a cause that you really care about – including the CDC Foundation and others that are supporting the COVID response.

In fact, through the end of June, Microsoft Rewards will match all donations to help make an even bigger impact. Try it. Join Microsoft Rewards, and switch on Give Mode and give with Bing. Give Mode is available now.

10. Microsoft Edge is ready for you (and it’s easy to switch)

The new Microsoft Edge is ready for anyone to download today by visiting Microsoft.com/Edge.  It’s available for Windows, Mac, iOS and Android. If you’re a Windows 10 customer and don’t have the new Microsoft Edge yet, you can download it today or look for it to come to your PC starting next month as we continue the roll-out.

And whether you download it yourself or wait for it to come to your PC, it’s super easy to switch with your favorites, passwords, form fill information and basic settings carrying over to the new Microsoft Edge with just a single click.
