What is Professional Dress For a Woman?

Once you arrive at Orientation many days will require either “Business Casual” or “Business Professional” dress. See below for recommended dress code guidelines.

Business Casual

Pants/skirts:
Women can wear casual pants or skirts. Neither should be tight. Fabrics should be crisp; colors should generally be solid; navy, black, gray, brown and khaki are always safe bets. For the most business-like appearance, pants should be creased and tailored; neither extreme of tight or flowing.

If you are pursuing a conservative industry and are in doubt, observe well-dressed women in your industry on the job, at career fairs, at information sessions, or consult your career coach.

Skirt length and slits:
Your skirt should come at least to your knees while you are standing. While you are seated, your thighs should be covered. If your skirt comes to just below the knee, a slit to just above the knee might be acceptable.

Business professional attire is the most conservative type of business wear. It’s what you’ll be expected to wear in the office if you work in accounting, finance, or other conservative industries. For women, this means a business suit or pantsuit, or dress and jacket.

Another decade of fashion is in the books. However, unlike most decades of fashion steered by music, film and celebrity, the 2010s leave behind a legacy that was influenced by social media, new gender codes and consumers’ unwillingness to sacrifice comfort.

Good or bad, here’s a look back at 6 fashion trends that shaped the decade.

1. Millennial pink

Name another decade defined by a color? And a youthful shade of pink at that. Millennial pink seeped into homes, closets, businesses, grids and even advertisements in the 2010s like a mist of optimism, equality and empowerment.

And in the process, the color gifted us with iconic fashion moments like the Giambattista Valli pink tulle gown Rihanna wore to the 2015 Grammy’s and the pink Edward Saxton suit worn by Harry Styles on the Today Show two years later. The Vogue-orchestrated Met Gala even swapped out its famous red carpet for a pink one at the 2019 event.

2. The Mansur Gavriel Bucket Bag

At the start of the decade, being trendy was synonymous with being big. What the marketing masterminds never could have accounted for was two women working in a compound in Southern California and their vegetable-tanned leather bucket bags.

Launched by Rachel Mansur and Floriana Gavriel in 2012 with a single, boxy shape, Mansur Gavriel quickly became the hottest brand name in fashion. Their bucket bag could not be kept in stock online or in stores; such was the demand that massive international retailers were sending out sign-up lists and email alerts for the $595 bag.

What Mansur Gavriel did, beyond making a covetable accessory, was crack open the floodgates to contemporary-priced bags that looked just as nice as Madison Avenue fare. Every Insta-brand has Rachel and Floriana to thank.

3. The Adam Selman x Le Specs Cat-Eye Sunglasses

We squinted through summer 2017 in Adam Selman’s inescapable “Last Lolita” sunglasses made in collaboration with the Australian eyewear brand Le Specs. Hamish Tame, a designer at Le Specs, told Vogue at the height of the shape’s fame, “We knew that it felt special, but we never in a million years could have imagined what a success the collaboration would become.”

The success spanned not only the famous—Zoë Kravitz, Gigi Hadid, and Kendall Jenner were regular wearers and sharers—but the real people of the world. Stalk through a mall, trot down the street, enter any bar in Brooklyn, and you would have seen dozens of women and girls wearing the shape or one of the mass-produced knockoffs. These are the heroes of our tiny sunglasses obsession.

4. The Balenciaga Triple S Sneaker

The ugly shoe to rule them all, Balenciaga’s Triple S sneaker entered the cultural consciousness with a thud on the brand’s Fall 2017 menswear runway. The hulking shoes were made to look like a composite of other popular sneakers, bringing together soles, treads, and laces in a monstrous form that could make even Frankenstein cringe.

So bad, so heavy…and yet so, so good. “It was really absolutely a proportional exercise of footwear, and not any kind of a gimmicky play with what was ugly or not ugly in shoe design,” Demna Gvasalia has said of the shoe’s genesis. Gimmick or not, shoppers rushed to get the sneakers like moths to a flame.

5. The Céline Luggage Tote

The deepest allure of Phoebe Philo’s Céline was, and always will be, the clothes. But she also could sell a bag, few as widely popular as the Luggage Tote. Though it came in three sizes, the largest was by and away the most prevalent.

Celebrities had to have it. Street-style stars couldn’t be without it. Regular women loved, wanted, and needed it. By this editor’s makeshift tally, no single item appeared more often in our street style slideshows than the Céline luggage tote.

6. The Kenzo Sweatshirt

When Carol Lim and Humberto Leon arrived at Kenzo as co-creative directors in 2011, the first thing they did was mine the house’s archives. There they found a tiger graphic first used by house founder Kenzo Takada in the ’70s and transformed it into the world’s most-coveted sweatshirt circa 2012.

Instantly recognizable, the sweatshirt transformed the idea of logomania into something beyond a monogram and become a symbol of fashion cred in the mid-teens.

Are Sleeveless Dresses Professional?

Generally, if you’re in air conditioning all day and especially if you interact with customers or the public, I think that a sleeveless top should be covered with something with sleeves – whether a sweater, jacket or another top.

Most companies frown on bare arms when you’re representing their company, as it looks more casual and less professional. I personally do not think anyone should ever show up to work in a sleeveless top with nothing available to put on over it.

The 2010s were a wild time. Amidst the proliferation of social media culture and plenty of wild happenings in fashion, they both flew by and are a reminder of just how far we’ve come in ten years.

We are here to help with the latter. The 2010s featured some incredible, cringeworthy, yet hilarious trends and fads. With the internet ruling our lives but not yet in the refined way it does today, everyone was participating in strange movements, clamoring for attention and not caring who knows it.

With how wild some of these trends and fads were, perhaps TikTok antics aren’t so far removed from millennials as teens, after all.

Dystopian Fiction

Considering the wild decade we just had, and the even wilder decade we’ve just entered, it’s nice to reflect on how we used to enjoy Dystopia, in the form of fiction of course. While the genre was popular before and continues to be after the early 2010s, these sci-fi novels and films really took hold of society at this time, with The Hunger Games and Divergent leading the pack.

Millions were captivated by the action, the drama, and the love triangles, which could honestly be a fad of their own (we’re looking at you, Twi-Hards), but this major trend brought people together, whether they were Team Peeta or Team Gale. 

Just Girly Things

With the rising popularity of Tumblr and Instagram at the beginning of the decade came the rise of Just Girly Things. You remember, those Pinterest-esque pictures of teens laughing and having fun with captioning like “remembering the good times: just girly things.”

While we’re pretty sure these posts weren’t just describing things girls do, we may never forget the romanticized world of pumpkin spice lattes and fishtail braids that has been parodied endlessly, while still being the source of inspiration for girls growing up on the internet. 

#YOLO

The acronym shouted around the world, YOLO would have to be my word of the decade. We first started hearing the catchy term for “You Only Live Once” on the internet and then, embarassingly enough, we actually began saying it in casual conversation and shouting it through the halls of middle schools across the nation.

While young people on the internet popularized this philosophical term, albeit simplified into an annoyingly catchy phrase we’ve now heard 200 million times, YOLO became a way of life, and soon enough, we even heard our parents use it.   

Extreme Contouring

By its basic definition, contouring is just using makeup to enhance certain features of the face or body, so technically, it’s been around forever. But remember that time in the early 2010s when the Kardashians had taken it to new heights and beauty gurus everywhere were uploading addicting videos finding creative ways to complete the practice, like clown contouring?

The Glossier age calmed this a bit, but this short-lived extremity is certainly part of the reason the Anastasia Beverly Hills palette got so popular.

The End of the World

1. Jeggings. At first, some were skeptical, but it didn’t take long for them to jump on the jean legging bandwagon. Now, they can’t stop wearing them.

2. Lelli Kelly shoes. These colorful, embellished kicks are a little on the expensive side, but we totally get why little girls love them. Who wouldn’t love a sparkly pair of shoes that come with lip gloss?

3. Faux Fur. Blame it on Rachel Zoe, but faux fur has trickled down to the toddler set and it couldn’t be cuter. From furry boots to a cute vest, there’s still time to get your girl some faux fur.

4. Silly Bandz. These colorful, stretchy bracelet were so popular this year, even high fashion designers–like Marc Jacobs–got in on them.

5. Desert Boots. These cool unisex boots are a trend the whole family can wear. We knew they were official when we saw Britney Spears’ son sporting them.

What Hairstyles Were Popular in The 2010s?

So, what were the hair and beauty trends that defined a decade? Keep scrollin’ to hit rewind and let the nostalgia sink in!

1. Ombré & Balayage

These two French words defined a decade in haircolor: ombré (shade) and balayage (to sweep). In the early 2010s, celebs like Miley Cyrus and Vanessa Hudgens led the cool-girl brigade of millennials wearing their haircolor dark at the roots and light on the ends with a quick transition at the mids.

The lived-in look exudes an effortlessly cool vibe with dramatically grown-out roots, paired perfectly with long layers OR a lob.

Is there a word we’ve heard more this past decade than balayage?! We don’t think so—although, it’s oftentimes mispronounced. The balayage trend came quickly after ombré, with its seamlessly blended highs and lows, heavy brightness around the face, and contouring effect. It’s no coincidence that around the same time, contouring was the No.1 makeup trend thanks to the Kardashian fam.

2. Beachy Waves

What did the 2010s show us? Effortless isn’t a look, it’s a lifestyle. That’s probably why beachy waves were (and remain!) the most-requested style in the salon. Paired perfectly with an ombré or balayage, these Cali-approved waves are STILL the everyday go-to for celebs, supermodels, Instagram models and most of our clients.

3. The Lob Haircut

The days of “But my boyfriend like’s it long!” are hopefully gone forever thanks to this decade-defining trend: the lob haircut. Longer and more lived-in than the bob, the lob lives somewhere between the chin and the collar bone.

Whether it’s worn sleek and swishy with a middle part or highly textured with fringe, this cut was legit EVERYWHERE throughout the 2010s. We saw shaggy texture, feathered bangs and blunt lines because there is truly a lob for every client. 

4. Man Buns

We can’t decide if the global “man bun moment” feels like yesterday or a lifetime ago, but BOY…it was a journey! We watched the trend’s rise and fall, and even witnessed a clip-on man bun situation somewhere along the way. We learned to accept the term ‘lumbersexual’ and realized not every hairline is ideal for the look. Tbh, we can still get down with a man bun when it’s done right.

5. Pastel Hair

Remember when literally everyone dyed their hair pink? Same. One of our favorite trends of the decade was the undeniable rise of fashion colors. Soft pastels went mainstream—suddenly becoming more accepted in the workplace, worn by celebs and clients alike and a common request in the salon.

Honestly, it’s pretty liberating to see clients who would typically be too scared to try vibrant color start playing with pastels.
