New Orleans has a spirit all its own, a place of celebration and culture that showcases food, music, and history from many walks of life.
Next time you’re in the area looking at New Orleans houses for sale, check out some favorite activities that NOLA natives take part in.
Groove to the Music
There is no shortage of spectacular live entertainment in New Orleans. Jazz, blues, roots, funk, R&B, rock, reggae, rap – you name it, someone will be playing it.
The Maison is the number one place for entertainment on Frenchman Street. This restaurant, bar, and music venue has three levels and typically hosts a jazz-oriented line-up.
The Howlin’ Wolf on South Peters Street is a concert venue that’s hosted a variety of talent, like Harry Connick Jr., Jimmy Buffet, St Paul & The Broken Bones, The Foo Fighters, and the BareNaked Ladies.
Of course, you can’t forget about the House of Blues. Not only are the musical acts on point, the menu of southern cuisines like po boys and jambalaya will have you asking for more.
Hang with the Animals
Two of the top attractions in the area center around animals: the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas and the Audubon Zoo, which are sister facilities.
The Zoo is one of the top 10 in the country, hosting educational programs and hands-on encounters as well as your typical exhibits. It even has the Cool Zoo, a water park to help you beat the heat on the sunniest of days.
The Aquarium transports visitors to the underwater worlds of the Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico, and tropical environs of the Amazon Rainforest. It’s home to more than 250 species and 3600 animals.
Savor the South
New Orleans is a mix of fine dining and casual cafes that cover cuisines like Cajun, Creole, French, and much in between.
One of the most noted restaurants in the area is Cochon, which offers up Cajun southern cooking and locally sources its ingredients.
Commander’s Place is also renowned, having been in NOLA since 1893. A steady parade of highly talented chefs have worked here, like Emeril Lagasse and Paul Prudhomme, making the food shine just as bright as the people preparing it.
Café Du Monde’s beignets must not be missed, the Stanley restaurant in the French Quarter is ideal for breakfast, and Casamento’s is exactly where you want to go for wild Gulf of Mexico oysters.
Get Down with Ghosts
New Orleans is often regarded as one of the most haunted cities in America. Many historical happenings fuel this fire of disgruntled spirits still lingering about. You can take your pick of the plethora of ghost tours that are offered daily.
If you feel brave enough to venture out on your own, check out the Andrew Jackson Hotel, Mahogany Jazz Hall, or Musee Conti Wax Museum, where tales of roaming spirits have been spun for decades.
Appreciate the Arts
The Studio Be arts studio features 35,000 feet of gallery space to enjoy. You can marvel at one of the city’s most famous photographers, Frank Relle, at his studio, or view contemporary art at Tresor Gallery.
