A moving inventory is a must

A reputable moving company will take inventory of all your belongings and determine the bulk and weight of your move either in person or through a virtual survey. The estimator should be thorough and check all of your storage places such as cupboards, drawers, garages and bookcases.

A large component of the mover’s price is based on the weight of your stuff and the space your goods take up in the truck. Be sure you understand this estimate and that it is as accurate as possible.

Get a thorough walk-through

An estimator who performs a quick walk-through without noting what you plan to move is going to be off the mark. A good estimator will ask questions about what you plan to take from your current house to your next home. So, be sure you are prepared to tell the estimator which items you don’t want on the truck — the items you plan to give away, donate, sell in a yard sale, or leave behind for the new owners.

Don’t pay a large deposit

So if you’re opening boxes a year later and find shards of glass, you’re out of luck. On moving day, try to open each box and sift through it to check for damage. Note any problems on the mover’s copy of the bill of lading before signing it.

Your mover has 30 days to acknowledge receipt of your claim. Within 120 days of receiving it, the mover must deny your claim or make an offer to pay.

At the end of the day, all purchases are simply an amount that a person is willing to pay and the seller is willing to accept. If they feel good about the reason they bought the company and the price they paid, its been a good deal.

3. Find Their Method of Valuation

There are as many methods of valuing a company as there are buyers. Pay attention to how your buyer thinks. If your buyer has never owned a moving business before, they don’t know what they don’t know.

To attract the newbie, you have to package your business up so it works for them. Anything involved in preparing will be of high value to them. They are insecure in their knowledge about the industry. If you can show them a path to get them up to speed quickly and safely they will pay you more money.

5. Don’t NEED to Sell

The urgency to sell is not your friend.

If you are working on a sale, have the reason for the sale be a natural life change, not an event that has ticking bomb urgency. The best message is, “I would love to continue to work in and grow this wonderful business, it is just that this one non-business related circumstance makes it smarter to hand this gem to you.”

Talk about your expansion plans. Ensure the buyer knows you own a company that is capable of growth. You are reluctantly moving on. Telling your buyer you are burned out is a fast track to a low price. Don’t be in a hurry. They want to buy a ticket on a moving train.

6. You Be The Bank

Very few people looking to buy a medium-sized moving business have a huge bank account from which they are going to write you the big lottery check. Cash deals are hard, and valuations on cash deals are lower. Every penny is counted when they are writing a check.

When you fund all or a portion of the deal it is called “owner carry.” That means you carry the note on the business. And you make the interest on the money you loan the client. Of course, there is risk. The buyer could default. And if they do, you own the company again. But if they don’t default you have increased the amount you make through interest on the credit you have extended. Be the bank.

7. Show Them Your Repeat Business.

Even in a business where people do not often use the product, like moving, repeat business is an important driver of revenue. A buyer with experience in the industry will ask you about your repeat business. A buyer new to the industry can be instructed on it. In either case, you must know how much of your business is from returning customers.

As you know, people have long memories when it comes to their mover. What you are offering the buyer is a busy, ringing phone, and repeat business is a key element of delivering that.

8. Highlight Your Systematic Approach to Professional Referrals

The system of referrals from professionals like Realtors and storage facilities is an ongoing source of business. If the business has had a systematic relationship with the real estate community, show it.

Without a consistent way of building relationships with local professionals, a business is of lesser value.

Real estate agents are at the front line of where the moving experience begins. They are an excellent source of referrals. Though there may be hundreds and hundreds of real estate agents in your market, not all of them actually sell.

What is the Best Algorithm to Estimate Costs in Moving Services?

Moving jobs can cost a few hundred to several thousand dollars. Because moving can be expensive, clients will want detailed, accurate estimates before they purchase your services.

Writing a formal estimate also helps a moving company take a detailed look at costs to that they end up making a profit. Just remember, you’re legally bound by the information in your written estimate, according to Consumer Affairs.

1. Visit the House

Don’t simply give quotes over the phone or online. It’s important to visit the potential client’s house in person so you know exactly what you’re dealing with and can charge accordingly. Otherwise, you might end up lowballing yourself and confusing the client with extra fees later.

The U.S. DOT Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration also requires that if the potential client lives within 50 miles of your location, you must draw up your estimate based on an in-person evaluation of the home’s contents. That said, the client can waive this right, if they wish, according to Consumer Affairs.

2. Make an Inventory List

Visiting the home will also obviously help you make an inventory list of everything you will move, something you need to include with your written estimate. You need to include all furniture, even smaller items, and the approximate number of boxes you’ll be moving. This inventory list must be included with your estimate.

3. Decide on a Type of Estimate

There are three types of moving estimates:

  1. Binding moving estimate: the price you provide in the estimate must be honored in the final invoice. If anything changes, though, such as having to move additional items, then you can adjust the price.
  2. Non-binding moving estimate: you can bill up to 110 percent of the price you provide in this type of estimate at delivery time and bill additional charges later. This estimate is your best guess and the final number is determined by the shipment weight and services provided.
  3. Binding-not-to-exceed moving estimate: same as a binding estimate except if the client’s items weigh less than you estimated, then the client pays less too.

4. Consider the Moving Date

Charge twice the average during busy moving seasons, like summer and holidays. You should also set a time limit on the quote, such as 30 days. If the client doesn’t make a decision after the quote’s expiration date, draw up a new one, if requested, and make sure to add extra charges if the new relocation date falls in a busier season.

5. Charge Based on Weight

Legitimate moving companies charge based on the weight of the contents being shipped for long-distance moves. Don’t charge based on volume (measured in cubic feet). This practice is illegal in most states and it’s easy to overcharge the customer this way, which will damage your reputation, according to Consumer Affairs. Charge per pound, instead. The average is 50 cents per pound, according to Home Advisor.

Here are some average times for local moves. Multiply the $25 per hour per mover rate as needed.

  • Studio apartment: three to five hours with two movers
  • Two-bedroom apartment: five to seven hours with three movers
  • Three-bedroom house: seven to ten hours with four movers
  • Homes over 5,000 square feet: it depends, but this can cost $1,500 to $2,000

6. Factor in Distance

Long-distance moves obviously will cost your client more. Here are some average prices for a move that’s about 1,000 miles with no additional services:

  • Studio apartment: $1,500 at minimum
  • One-bedroom apartment: $1,800 to $2,500
  • Two-bedroom home: $3,500 to $4,200

7. Factor in Additional Costs

Now it’s time to factor in additional costs. Some of them you’ll know about from visiting the home, others you’ll need the client’s approval for. Make sure all of them are included in your written estimate so the client knows exactly what these extra fees are for and how much they’ll have to pay for these moving services.

Here are some typical additional costs:

  • Stairs: some companies include a flight of stairs in their prices, others charge extra to carry items up and down stairs
  • Long carry: specific how far your movers will carry items to their truck. Anything over that should be charged extra.
  • Shuttle service: a shuttle service may be necessary if you can’t park your moving truck near the house
  • Packing: charge for packing materials and the service itself (which you can charge per item or by the hour), if the client chooses this option. This usually costs $25 to $35 an hour, according to My Moving Reviews.
  • Large and heavy items: include pianos, safes etc. If you’re able to move these big, heavy items, charge extra. Moving a piano should cost $150 to $800.
  • Moving insurance: it’s required for you to provide basic insurance but give the client the option to buy full-value coverage

All in all, a move within a state should cost the customer around $1,170 based on a weight of 7,400 pounds and a crew of four. Of course, this price will go up and down depending on the location. A move between states should cost around $5,630 with a weight of 7,400 pounds on average and a distance of 1,220 miles (with the same caveat as before), according to Angie’s List.

Income tax

There is none, at least for now. People working in UAE do not need to pay any income taxes.

The UAE does not levy any tax on income. Whether it’s a business or an individual working independently, everything that a person earns is not taxable. However, this is about to change as the UAE recently announced a federal corporate tax on businesses for the first time ever.

From June 1, 2023, businesses with an income of more than AED 375,000 will be subject to a corporate income tax at a fixed rate of 9% on income exceeding AED 375,000. The income tax will stay at 0% for incomes below that level.

Capital gains tax

Capital gains tax is again zero in the UAE. As the region is funded mostly by oil and gas money, it barely levies any taxes. In fact, there is no concept of taxes such as inheritance tax, capital gains tax, estate tax, etc. in the UAE

How do I Charge for Moving Services?

When moving locally, most movers will charge an hourly rate and estimate the cost based on the number of movers and trucks needed for how long. Movers will have different hourly rates for 2 movers, 3 movers, 4 movers and so on.

The hourly rate will also increase if more moving trucks are needed. Some local movers may also charge a flat rate. When moving long-distance, movers will charge by the weight of goods, the distance those goods are traveling, and any additional or accessorial charges that may occur.

Depending on whether you are moving locally or long distance will determine how the moving company will charge.

Local movers charge an hourly rate that generally includes a moving truck, all the equipment, miscellaneous materials, and the movers.

The more moving helpers or trucks needed for your specific move, the higher the hourly rate will be. For example, a truck and 2 movers may cost $120 per hour. A truck and 3 movers may cost $175 per hour. 2 trucks and 4 movers may cost $240 per hour etc.

It’s also a good idea to choose a mover who gives you a binding not-to-exceed estimate as opposed to a binding or non-binding estimate. A binding not-to-exceed estimate prevents a moving company from giving you a too-good-to-be-true quote, only to surprise you with a much higher bill later.

Instead, a binding not-to-exceed type of estimate ensures that even if the weight of your shipment exceeds the original estimate, you’ll only be charged the amount you were originally quoted. If the shipment weighs less than originally estimated, then you’ll pay less than originally quoted.
