Over the last decade Tadoba has firmly established itself as one of India’s premier tiger safari destinations, and for a good reason! The Tadoba habitat and the greater Tadoba landscape houses an incredible number of tigers supported by a large number of waterbodies (1 per 2 sq. kms on an average as per the Forest Department recommendations), good prey density and a dense bamboo and teak jungle.

Before going into the technicalities, let us dig into the details that matter right away!

What Zone is Best in Tadoba?

Tadoba National Park as the locals call it is “The Real Land of the Tiger” and all gates lead you to this ever so exciting forest which guarantees an adventure of a lifetime!

The National Park is divided into 3 forest ranges :

1. Tadoba North Range

2. Moharli Range

3. Kolsa South Range

These ranges are interconnected and can be covered during a Safari from either of their gates. Each of these ranges have core zones and buffer zones.

The core zone of Tadoba has 6 gates and the buffer zone of Tadoba has 12 gates of entry to the park currently.

The 6 best entry gates of the Tadoba core zone are:-

1. Moharli Gate4. Navegaon Gate
2. Khutwanda Gate5. Pangdi
3. Kolara Gate6. Zari Gate

The core zone is the protected demarcated area of the forest department where the natural resources and wildlife are highly conserved and human activity is extremely limited.

In Tadoba, both the core and the buffer zones have excellent sightings due to the rich and bountiful wildlife species of approximately 62 mammals, 291 birds, 9 amphibians, 34 Reptile Species and 174 species of butterflies. The highlight for most being the 115 tigers and the 151 leopards and yes the elusive black leopard is also amongst them.

Do keep in mind that these gates may be very far from each other and it is advisable to book safaris at gates which are closer to where you are staying. Below are the gates that can be booked according to the zone that is closest to where you are staying. Waghoba Eco Lodge is closest to Khutwanda gate (15 minutes) and Moharli gate (30 minutes) of  Moharli Zone and hence it is advisable to book safaris from this zone while staying at Waghoba Eco Lodge.

1. Moharli zone

· Core gate – Moharli, Khutwanda

· Buffer gates – Devada, Adegao, Agarzari, Junona & Mamla gates.

2. Kolara zone

· Core gate – Kolara

· Buffer gates – Alizanza, Madnapur, Sirkheda, Kolara Chauradeo, Palasgaon & Belara gates

3. Navegaon zone

· Core gate – Navegaon

· Buffer gates – Navegaon Ramdegi & Nimdela gates.

4. Pangadi and Zari zone

· Core gate – Pangadi & Zari

· Buffer gates – Pangadi Aswal Chuha, Keslaghat & Zari Peth gates

Although there are around around 18 water bodies in Tadoba, the significant lakes are Tadoba Lake, Jamani Lake and Telia Lake that are brimming with wildlife and breath taking landscapes. These lakes are not only vital for the flora and fauna of the park but also several human inhabitants around the park. Of course the dominant species the big cats have declared these as their lair.

Which is Better Kanha or Tadoba?

KANHA: Chances of seeing a tiger reduced compared to BAND & RANTH, but still better than a lot of other parks. Probably due to larger size of park and denser jungle? Get impression that Kanha may offer chance for more natural tiger viewing than first two parks. Also, offers other species you may not see elsewhere

TADOBA: Most persons get the impression that this is an up and comer in terms of tiger viewing. Makes them wonder if perhaps they’ve been reading dated info online and if perhaps a Tadoba should rank higher than afore-mentioned parks for tiger viewing. Have heard sloth bears and leopards seen here more frequently than other parks.

Have also heard bamboo forests here offer different terrain than other parks. Proximity to Delhi and Ranthambore might make it more doable if costs make far away geography of Kanha not doable. Wondering if you need to be giving this park more of a look than you have some of the others.

How do I Book Safari in Tadoba?

The Jeep Safari is the best thing that one can experience in Tadoba National Park. The open Jeep ride, also known as tiger safari is usually of few hours in the dense reserve, where the chances of spotting a tiger and other wild animals are relatively high. The tourists can explore the Tadoba Park on open jeeps and view the habitat of wild animals like the tiger, leopard, sloth bear, wild dogs, panther, barking deer, wolf, and many more.

The tourists are not allowed to get down the jeep throughout the safari excursion as this might risk their life. In addition, they need to follow set of rules and regulations at the time of tiger safari, which the park guide can explain as he/she is completely aware of that.

To book Jeep Safari in advance, one can visit the DFO Office at Chandrapur District near the tiger reserve and try for spot booking at the Navegoan Gate as no online booking facility is available at the moment. The jeeps can be hired from the local taxi stands who also provide trained drivers.

What is The Best Time to Visit Tadoba?

The best time to visit Tadoba National Park is between October and June. You can expect to spot most tigers between March and June. The Park remains closed between July and September.
